    Description: The MOSES test campaign ELBE 2020 includes activities along the middle reaches to the tidal Elbe river and the German Bight. The inland Elbe river part of the campaign covers physico-chemical parameters from various sites along the Elbe River and its main tributaries. The sampling was conducted in a Langrangian way according to travel time, particularly between Aug 04 to Aug 12. Discharge in Magdeburg was 241 m³/s which is about mean low discharge (231 m³/s). Physico-chemical parameters as well as nutrients were sampled using the research vessel ALBIS from Schmilka (km 4, German border) to Geestacht (km 585, close to Hamburg). The targets were water quality measurement by multiparameter probes and chemical analyses, the detection of phytoplankton growth and decrease of dissolved nutrients along the river.

    Description: In August 2020 the research vessel Albis investigated the river Elbe from Schmielka towards Geesthacht. Basic hydrographic parameters were measured continuously, with a portable ferryBox. Dissolved methane was continuously determined with a degassing unit and a Greenhouse Gas Analyzer from LosGatosResearch. Atmospheric CH4 and CO2 was determined with a Licor system.

    Description: Four sampling campaigns were performed in the middle part of River Elbe between Elster (river km 199) and Dömitz (km 506). Measurements were done at different seasons and discharge conditions in April, June, August, and October 2021. The sampling was conducted in a Lagrangian way according to travel time using the research vessel Albis. For each campaign, data files of the multiparameter probe and of waterchemical analyses are provided.

    Description: The MOSES campaign ELBE 2022 covered the Czech freshwater Elbe, the German freshwater part, the tidal Elbe river, and the German Bight. Thus, the complete gradient from source to sea was investigated for the first time. The sampling will be conducted in a Langrangian way according to flow velocity. In the German freshwater Elbe, physico-chemical and biological parameters will be measured along the Elbe using the research vessel ALBIS from Schmilka (km 4, German border) to Geestacht (km 585, close to Hamburg). A particular scientific focus was on (1) composition of dissolved organic matter measured by high-resolution mass specrometry, (2) investigation of zooplankton besides bacteria and algae, and (3) greenhouse gas measurements in water and air (the latter was investigated in more detail during an addition campaing in Tangermünde in August 2022).

    Description: The MOSES campaign ELBE 2023 covered the whole River Elbe from the source in the Czech Republic, the German freshwater part, the tidal Elbe river, towards the German Bight, where we try to follow the river plume with three ships by help of drifters. In the German freshwater Elbe, physico-chemical and biological parameters will be measured along the Elbe using the research vessel ALBIS from Schmilka (km 4, German border) to Geestacht (km 585, close to Hamburg) in a Langrangian approach. The scientific focus in 2023 was on pollutants, particularly pharmaceuticals, herbicides, and microplastics. For that, we sample not only water but also sediments, and use passive samplers. In addition, a land team sampled tributaries and effluents of weaste water treatment plants parallel to the ship.

    Description: Plant protection products in the environment are partly responsible for the progressive loss of biodiversity. The mostly insufficient ecological status of surface waters is often explained by habitat degradation and excessive nutrient input. But what role do plant protection products play in this context? The Kleingewässermonitoring (KgM) project provides a worldwide unique quantitative assessment of the impact of pesticides from diffuse agricultural sources on small and medium-sized streams. The dataset comprises 124 monitoring stream sections all over Germany covering a wide pollution gradient where consistent measurements were carried out in 2018 and 2019 during the major pesticide application period from April to July. These measurements include event-driven sampling to record surface rainfall-induced short-term peak concentrations in addition to regular grab sampling of pesticides and a wide range of other pollutants resulting in more than 1,000 water samples. All further relevant anthropogenic and environmental parameters reigning ecological stream quality were recorded comprehensively (morphological and stream bed structure, temperature, flow velocity, dissolved oxygen, pH, catchment land use, stream profile). The dataset also contains effect monitoring data featuring sampled invertebrate communities and bioassay analyses of water samples. The data enables an assessment of pesticide exposure and related effects as well as the analysis of complex causal relationships in streams.
