    Notes: We report the results of molecular dynamics simulations of Langmuir monolayers of F(CF2)20F using both a united atom model and a recently developed anisotropic united atom model of the molecular force field. A comparison of our simulation results to experimental measures of the structure of Langmuir monolayers and lamellar crystals of F(CF2)20F indicates that the anisotropic united atom model provides the better representation. Simulations using the new model at 275 K generate an azimuthally disordered rotator phase monolayer, while simulations at 150 K generate a monolayer phase with azimuthal order. The relative intensities of peaks in the in-plane structure function can be used to distinguish between the azimuthally ordered and disordered phases. Our simulations also predict, in agreement with experiment, that at large average areas per molecule the monolayer breaks up into islands that have a close-packed structure at the center but are disordered at the periphery. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the results of molecular dynamics simulations of close-packed Langmuir monolayers of F(CF2)11COOH using both a united atom model and a new anisotropic united atom model of the molecular force field. The stimulus for this investigation was the interpretation of the data from a recent grazing incidence x-ray diffraction study of this system [M. Goldmann et al., J. Phys. II France 4, 773 (1994)] to imply the existence of some degree of azimuthal ordering of the molecules in the close packed monolayer. With our new potential field, simulations at 275 K generate a monolayer in an azimuthally disordered rotator phase, while simulations at 150 K generate a monolayer phase with weak azimuthal order. We find that the relative intensities of peaks in the in-plane structure function can be used to distinguish between azimuthally ordered and disordered phases of the monolayer. Our simulation results are consistent with the available experimental data except for the temperature at which azimuthal ordering is detected, which difference is likely due to the inaccuracy of the intermolecular potential used in the simulations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report direct spectroscopic evidence for parity-forbidden electronic transitions in CdSe nanocrystals and relate it through perturbation theory to an internal electric field. This field is consistent with an estimated spontaneous polarization of Ps=−0.6 μC/cm2 for CdSe. The observed mixing of odd and even band edge hole states by this symmetry breaking internal electric field indicates that current theories of nanocrystal electronic structure, which assume inversion symmetry, require substantial revision. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract  Rationale: Methods that test for the central effects of α2-adrenoceptor antagonists can facilitate the clinical development of such compounds. Recently we evaluated the effects of idazoxan (IDX), an α2-adrenoceptor antagonist with high affinity for imidazoline sites, on a variety of measures potentially sensitive to blockade of α2-adrenoceptors including regional brain glucose metabolic rate. Objective: To test whether these effects on brain metabolic rate could have been mediated by imidazoline binding sites, single dose challenges of 9 or 12 mcg/kg ethoxyidazoxan (ETX; an α2-adrenoceptor antagonist which does not bind to imidazoline sites) were given to healthy male volunteers. Methods: The effects on brain glucose metabolism, blood pressure, catecholamines, and behavior were assessed. Results: Blood pressure increased 10–15% after both doses. Plasma catecholamines increased 2- to 2.5-fold and responses were dose dependent. There was no evidence of either dose being anxiogenic. Both doses of ETX produced diffuse increases in brain glucose metabolism. Conclusions: Brain glucose metabolic responses were more widespread and monotonic than we had observed with IDX. ETX also produced robust increases in glucose metabolism in cerebellum. While we were unable to exclude the possibility that some of the brain metabolic responses we had observed with IDX were mediated by imidazoline sites, ETX may be sufficiently distinct from IDX in α2-adrenoceptor affinity that differences in acute metabolic responses occurred.

    Description: The Sea of Galilee in northeast Israel is a freshwater lake filling a morphological depression along the Dead Sea Fault. It is located in a tectonically complex area, where a N-S main fault system intersects secondary fault patterns non-univocally interpreted by previous reconstructions. A set of multiscale geophysical, geochemical and seismological data, reprocessed or newly collected, was analysed to unravel the interplay between shallow tectonic deformations and geodynamic processes. The result is a neotectonic map highlighting major seismogenic faults in a key region at the boundary between the Africa/Sinai and Arabian plates. Most active seismogenic displacement occurs along NNW-SSE oriented transtensional faults. This results in a left-lateral bifurcation of the Dead Sea Fault forming a rhomb-shaped depression we named the Capharnaum Trough, located off-track relative to the alleged principal deformation zone. Low-magnitude (ML = 3-4) epicentres accurately located during a recent seismic sequence are aligned along this feature, whose activity, depth and regional importance is supported by geophysical and geochemical evidence. This case study, involving a multiscale/multidisciplinary approach, may serve as a reference for similar geodynamic settings in the world, where unravelling geometric and kinematic complexities is challenging but fundamental for reliable earthquake hazard assessments.

    Description: Optic technologies and methods/procedures are established across all areas and scales in limnic and marine research in Germany and develop further continuously. The working group “Aquatic Optic Technologies” (AOT) constitutes a common platform for knowledge transfer among scientists and users, provides a synergistic environment for the national developer community and will enhance the international visibility of the German activities in this field. This document summarizes the AOT-procedures and -techniques applied by national research institutions. We expect to initiate a trend towards harmonization across institutes. This will facilitate the establishment of open standards, provide better access to documentation, and render technical assistance for systems integration. The document consists of the parts: Platforms and carrier systems outlines the main application areas and the used technologies. Focus parameters specifies the parameters measured by means of optical methods/techniques and indicates to which extent these parameters have a socio-political dimension. Methods presents the individual optical sensors and their underlying physical methods. Similarities denominates the common space of AOT-techniques and applications. National developments lists projects and developer groups in Germany designing optical hightechnologies for limnic and marine scientific purposes.

    Description: CO2-induced ocean acidification and associated decrease of seawater carbonate saturation state contributed to multiple environmental crises in Earth’s history, and currently poses a major threat for marine calcifying organisms. Owing to their high abundance and good preservation in the Phanerozoic geological record, brachiopods present an advantageous taxon of marine calcifiers for palaeo-proxy applications as well as studies on biological mechanism to cope with environmental change. To investigate the geochemical and physiological responses of brachiopods to prolonged low-pH conditions we cultured Magellania venosa, Terebratella dorsata and Pajaudina atlantica under controlled experimental settings over a period of more than two years. Our experiments demonstrate that brachiopods form their calcite shells under strong biological control, which enables them to survive and grow under low-pH conditions and even in seawater strongly undersaturated with respect to calcite (pH = 7.35, Ωcal = 0.6). Using boron isotope (δ11B) systematics including MC-ICP-MS as well as SIMS analyses, validated against in vivo microelectrode measurements, we show that this resilience is achieved by strict regulation of the calcifying fluid pH between the epithelial mantle and the shell. We provide a culture-based δ11B−pH calibration, which as a result of the internal pH regulatory mechanisms deviates from the inorganic borate ion to pH relationship, but confirms a clear yet subtle pH dependency for brachiopods. At a micro-scale level, the incorporation of boron appears to be principally driven by a physiological gradient across the shell, where the δ11B values of the innermost calcite record the internal calcifying fluid pH while the composition of the outermost layers is also influenced by seawater pH. These findings are of consequence to studies on biomineralisation processes, physiological adaptations as well as past climate reconstructions.
