Description:
Cheilosia griseiventris sensu Stubbs & Falk (1983) new to the Netherlands (Diptera:\nSyrphidae)\nAlthough already recognized as a distinct species in Britain by Stubbs & Falk (1983), other\nauthors have treated Cheilosia griseiventris (Zetterstedt, 1843) as a (possible) synonym of\nC. latifrons Loew, 1857. Unpublished taxonomic results indicate that these taxa should be considered\nas separate species, but also that there may be more than two European species involved.\nSo possibly the name griseiventris is not applied correctly. However, until the taxonomy of the\nlatifrons-complex is fully resolved, we use the name griseiventris. The nine specimens from the\nNetherlands agree with the British specimens of C. griseiventris. Based on these specimens,\nthe species is recorded from the Netherlands for the first time. All specimens were collected in\nAugust and September. The localities suggest a preference for open, ruderal, possibly calcareous\nareas.
