Description: In energy sector, female researchers are still a minority: cultural factors, education, self-limitations, stereotypes, difficulties in work-life balance contribute to this situation. In the first part, the paper reflects on how gender issues are taken into account in the general framework of Responsible Research and Innovation, indicating how gender is pervasive, but still not explicitly addressed in its full potential; in the second part, the GRECO project on solar energy and open science is presented as a project counteracting this situation; gender dimensions are explored from scientists to citizen participation, language used and analysis performed. Finally, the challenge of engendering impact is addressed.

Description: In public research organizations in Italy, communication and outreach, as well as research support services, are often left to women. Consequently, the role which female staff plays, becomes central in communication processes both inside and outside the organization. An increasing number of female researchers have to abandon terms like “il ricercatore” (the researcher, used in the masculine form of the noun) or “man/month” in everyday language without fear of being diminished because of the use of feminine, nor of being discriminated while considered feminists. They should instead use inclusive expressions, taking into account gender, hence communicating real images of science and scientists. On the other hand, administrative documents should address the whole personnel, and not only to the ubiquitous “il dipendente” (the employee, masculine noun) opposed to “lavoratrici madri” (“mother-workers”). There is a plenty of opportunities to convey images of science meaning that research is performed both by women and men, and that consequences are addressed to women and men: activities with schools, seminars, outreach events and exhibitions, institutional communication and social networks. The responsibilities of an inclusive communication are numerous; they invest institutions and bodies in charge with structural changes in the organizations as well as those people who every day interact with users and participants of knowledge processes. Training as well as a daily practice are necessary. The paper comments some communication experiences in earth sciences, in progress at the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology of Italy – INGV.

Description: Stemming from experiences in research and communication in the environmental field (climate changes, pollution, earth sciences, …) some considerations about gender dimensions in environmental research are illustrated. Multiple gender dimensions exist, expanding the boundaries and enriching the research itself. First dimension refers to the gender of researchers, from the few pioneers of the past to the huge number of women that today are active in environmental research providing original contributions. Another dimension is that of gender differences in the impact of environmental changes: several studies indicate how impacts of climate changes on women and men vary significantly, and this issue must be addressed when implementing policies. Moreover, one gender dimension refers to the epistemological level, addressing the feminist approach to science, with situated knowledges and citizen science. Another dimension is that of presence of women in environmental organizations, a presence arising new research questions about environmental protection and healthcare.

Description: Professional geosciences organizations which support governments, industry and academic institutions in setting standards for communication, responsible use of geosciences information and continuing professional development do have codes of professional conduct, binding their members. In strengthening the relationships of professional organizations with industry, society and academy, it becomes interesting to highlight similarities and fruitful points of contacts between codes of professional ethics and the Charter of Researchers. Ethical principles, professional responsibility and attitude, accountability, dissemination and exploitation of results, public engagement, continuing professional development are some of the remarkable principles.Gender issues are also vital, as starting point to rethink processes in the knowledge society. Structural changes in institutions to improve excellence in research need more women in decision-making bodies, practices of work-family balance and codes of conduct which prevent hidden discriminations. In communication of natural hazards that have societal impact, the diversity management of both target public and communicators can make the difference between a generic communication and an effective one which is more tailored to information needs of women and men acting in the society.
