Description / Table of Contents: Written at a time when the psychology of education was still in its infancy, this volume explains the scientific interpretation of dreams. The importance of the Dream Mind in normal behaviour, and in the production and appreciation of literature and art, is illustrated by numerous examples. Educational methods in the home and at school are reviewed in the light of this 'new' knowledge.

Notes: Approximate analytic results for two problems involving the inflation of rubber inner tubes and tires are summarized with a view to prompting a comparison of the theory with experimental results. The problems considered are the uniform inflation by internal pressure of a toroidal rubber inner tube or tire which is a perfect torus either in the deformed or undeformed state. The inner tubes or tires are assumed to be free to inflate, that is, they are assumed not to be constrained, for example by a wheel.

Notes: The type of surface of the perforated plate influences the performance of a perforated-plate column. Pilot plant data on a 4-in column for the system toluenediethylamine-water at 20°C. show that when the water phase is dispersed and the direction of mass transfer is from the continuous toluene to the dispersed water phase polyethylene plates give a continuous stream of droplets and a higher efficiency, but that when the direction of mass transfer is from the dispersed water to the continuous toluene phase the metal plates give the higher efficiency.

Notes: Blood glycoproteins containing terminal non-reducing D-galactosyl groups have previously been shown to be rapidly cleared from the circulatory system of animals. This occurs by interaction at the asialoglycoprotein receptor of the hepatocytes. We prepared several carbohydrate-insulin conjugates, containing one or more terminal D-galactosyl residues, to study their binding to this receptor. Fast atom bombardment (FAB) and 252Cf plasma desorption (PD) mass spectrometry were used to characterize the conjugates formed when insulin was treated with N-hydroxysuccinimide lactobionate. The synthetic approach, using N-hydroxysuccinimide amino acid esters, is a well-known procedure for peptide synthesis. However, the coupling reaction did not yield the expected lactobionyl insulin products. Instead, each lactobionyl group was accompained by an additional mass increment (115 daltons) in the conjugate structure. PD mass spectrometry verified that the products were intact modified insulins, while FAB mass spectrometry, with computerized peak matching and tandem mass spectrometry, provided the exact mass and structure of the additional mass increment. The two desorption ionization methods provided complementary data enabling the rapid characterization of these unexpected synthetic products.

Notes: A carbon fiber-reinforced carbon is being evaluated as a promising implant material. In a unidirectional composite, high strengths (1200 MN/m2 longitudinal flexural strength) and high modulus (140 GN/m2 flexural modulus) may be obtained with an interlaminar shear strength of 18 MN/m2. Alternatively, layers of fibers may be laid in two directions to give more isotopic properties. The compatibility of the material with bone has been studied by implanting specimens in holes drilled in rat femora. For a period of up to 8 weeks, a thin layer of fibrous tissue bridged the gap between bone and implant; but this tissue mineralizes and by 10 weeks, bone can be observed adjacent to the implant, giving firm fixation. Potential applications include endosseous dental implants where a greater strength in the neck than that provided by unreinforced carbon would be advantageous.

Notes: Differential thermal analysis has been applied to several silicone polymers and compounds with the use of oxidative conditions. The model compounds gave melting points corresponding to literature values. However, volatilization gave a broad endotherm much lower than extrapolated boiling points. The order, in oxidative resistance, was dimethyl silicone oil, silphenylene, methyl phenyl silicone oil.
