Notes:
The proton coupled and decoupled 13C NMR spectra of 4H-quinolizine 1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylate and its less stable tautomer 9aH-quinolizine 1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylate have been investigated. All 13C resonances have been assigned, and a number of the one-, two- and three-bond carbon-proton coupling constants obtained for these compounds and some of their methyl derivatives. The principal conclusion from the data is that the nitrogen atom is positively charged as a result of extensive conjugation.
