Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Histologische Untersuchungen an sagittal orientierten Celloidinschnitten menschlicher Augen (44 Fälle) ergaben eindeutige Altersveränderungen am Ciliarepithel.
Notes: Summary Sagittal sections of 44 celloidin embedded human eyes were studied with regard to the age changes on the ciliary epithelium. The most pronounced histologic changes were seen in two regions, namely within the middle and posterior part of the ciliary valleys and within the area near the Ora serrata. In these regions, the zonula fibers, i.e., anteriorly the “stretching fibers” and posteriorly the “holding fibers”, are more firmly attached to the ciliary epithelium than elsewhere. Within these areas, the non-pigmented ciliary epitheliums shows additional cell groups, which become separated from the epithelial layer with increasing age. They finally form a new layer of isolated cell clusters, which were called “covering cells”. The number of these cells increases with age. They also showed tendency to spread out, but even in the highest age groups no complete, continuous cell layer was developed inside the non-pigmented ciliary epithelium. In the same areas, the pigmented epithelium reveals characteristic age changes. The diameter of the epithelial layer increases with age and the outer portions of the cells develop cluband pluglike protrusions against the stromal tissue, especially the so-called Mueller's reticulum. In this way the attachment of the epithelium at the ciliary body becomes stronger with age. On the other side of the ciliary epithelium as well the development of “covering cells” leads to an increased attachment of the epithelial layer to the zonula apparatus, due to the increased epithelial surface and the specific form of its connection to the zonular fiber bundles. These results are in good agreement with the new accommodation theory of Rohen and Rentsch (1969).

Notes: Summary The clinicopathological features of two carcinosarcomas of the urinary bladder are reported. The tumours occurred in a 64- and a 66-year-old patient presenting with haematuria and both were polypoid. The epithelial component was consistent with small cell undifferentiated carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation, whereas the sarcomatous component did not display specific features. The carcinomatous component showed immunohistochemical reactivity for different epithelial markers as well as for chromogranin and neuron specific enolase. Conversely, the sarcomatous cells stained strongly for vimentin and in one case for muscle actin and smooth muscle actin. The differential diagnosis of biphasic tumours of the bladder is discussed and the literature reviewed.

Notes: Abstract We analysed p53 protein immunoreactivity in hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) and in liver cell dysplasia (LCD) of patients from an area in Northern China, using five anti-p53 protein antibodies recognizing different epitopes of the protein. In HCCs, the overall prevalence of p53 protein immunoreactivity was 78.3%. However, prevalence was strongly influenced by the type of antibody used, ranging from 67.5% for antibody PAb-1801 to only 10.8% for antibodies PAb-421 and DO-7. p53 protein immunoreactivity was not related to type or grade of HCC. In contrast to former reports, p53 protein staining was restricted to nuclei only when using the CM-1 antibody, whereas two other antibodies yielded both, nuclear and cytoplasmic or membrane staining, and no nuclear staining was observed with antibodies PAb-421 and DO-7, the latter two, however, demonstrating cytoplasmic and membrane staining. For LCD, three subtypes were morphologically and karyometrically defined. Nuclei of some LCD cells were p53 immunoreactive, but positivity was restricted to the small cell variant of LCD. Positivity was different for cirrhosis with or without associated HCC, amounting to 18.9% in the former and 39.4% in the latter. Interestingly, p53 protein immunoreactivity also occurred in a set of small hepatocytes not showing the typical features of LCD and therefore classified as simple regenerating liver cells.

Notes: Abstract  Alcohol-induced damage to the liver results in a wide array of typical alterations. Whereas the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of fatty change, hepatocyte ballooning, Mallory body formation and fibrosis have been studied in detail, little is known about hepatocyte apoptosis in alcoholic liver disease (ALD). In this retrospective study we analysed parenchymal cell death in ALD systematically by the use of in situ DNA nick-end labelling (ISEL/TUNEL). We show that increased hepatocyte TdT labelling occurs in ALD. Labelling is observed more frequently in parenchymal areas exhibiting advanced damage (ballooning degeneration with or without Mallory bodies, cholestasis and perisinusoidal fibrosis). In addition, hepatocyte TdT labelling is higher where there is septal fibrosis and nodular remodelling. Conversely, it is not elevated in ballooning hepatocytes themselves, but rather in the apparently normal hepatocytes in their vicinity.

Notes: Summary The effect of various antibiotic drugs on wound-healing was investigated following parenteral administration in rats. The criterion for healing was the tensile strength of an incised and sutured healing skin wound. Therapeutic doses of gentamycin and tetracycline and sub-toxic doses of ampicillin demonstrated a significant inhibition of cicatrisation. The underlying biochemical mechanism involved in delays in the wound-healing process that are not attributable to bacterial causes is assumed to be the inhibition of protein synthesis, particularly that of connective tissue.
