    Notes: Abstract.  The transient behavior of a class of nonlinear differential systems representing stage-structured populations is studied. The qualitative dynamics are described in terms of succession of extrema for the state variables, or for the integrated difference between two trajectories. The rules giving the possibilities of extrema are derived, they characterize the classical stage-structured models. These rules can be compared with experiments to validate the structure of the model. An explanation for the disagreement of this transition scheme with some experiments could be an unexpected interaction with another variable. A new model taking the interaction into account thus engenders new transition rules, which are to be compared with experiments. These results are illustrated with experiments on copepods, showing how the qualitative experimental features can help the construction and the validation of the models.

    Notes: Abstract A model representing the predator‐prey interactions between two copepod species, Euterpina acutifrons and Temora stylifera, with unlimited resources was used to study effects of exploitation. Exploitation is modeled by harvesting strategies characterized through three parameters: the selectivity of gear, the frequency of harvest, and the intensity of harvest effort. Simulations of different harvesting strategies suggest that interactions between species influence the dynamic behaviors of the populations as well as harvesting yields.

    Description: We have studied experimentally in the laboratory the behavioural responses of females and males of the calanoid copepodTemora longicornis and their encounter probability with the alga Rhodomonas. Both sexes of this calanoid copepod adapted their motion velocity and style of swimming in reaction to the presence of prey. Their mean velocity, as well as the probability of high velocity values, increased in the presence of the algae. Moreover, the time spent in swimming activity increased, reflecting a possible adaptation in order to facilitate encounter with prey. Females were more sensitive to the presence of food: mean velocities showed a 40 % increase for males, from control to food conditions, whereas for females the increase was 240 %. This result was confirmed using several indicators: net-to-gross displacement ratio, probability density functions, and symbolic dynamics. This may indicate that female T. longicornis are more attracted by food than males.

    Description: Ontogenetic changes in resource use are widespread in many fish species. This study investigated the feeding habits of whitefish (C. lavaretus L.) larvae in Lake Annecy (France) coupled with experimental behavioral studies in order to identify the underlying mechanisms of the ontogenetic shifts in the diet. The predatory behavior of wild larvae, and the escape responses of their zooplankton prey were both videorecorded in experimental tanks under controlled laboratory conditions. Ontogenetic diet patterns showed that young whitefish larvae have a preference for small cyclops, while older larvae selectively predate cladocerans. Our experimental observations showed that the capture success rate also varied in relation to ontogenetic development in fish. Young larvae were more successful in capturing small copepods, whereas old larvae were more successful in capturing Daphnia. In addition, the larvae were able to adjust their predatory behavior (speed, pursuit) according to the swimming pattern of the prey. These observations suggest that the selective predation on cladocerans observed in old larvae is the outcome of both active and passive choices depending on the escape swimming behavior of the prey, and handling time of the predator.
