    Notes: Abstract Tadpoles in small, ephemeral pools whose duration and food content are unpredictable can potentially encounter substantial variation in diet composition and availability. We compared the effects of 10 days of food deprivation occurring early, midway and late in ontogeny on the metamorphic size and bioenergetic properties of Hyla chrysoscelis tadpoles. Tadpoles fed throughout ontogeny were controls. Metamorphs from tadpoles starved early and midway in ontogeny had the same snout-vent length and dry mass as controls, but the time to metamorphosis was extended by 8 and 19% respectively. Metamorphs of tadpoles starved late in development attained 85% of the length and 55% of the mass of controls, metamorphosed at the same time as controls, and suffered mortality 15 times greater than other treatments, perhaps because they were near the absolute minimum necessary level of energy reserves. There were no significant differences in percent organic matter, percent tissue water, condition index, and protein or glycogen concentrations between any experimental and control treatments. If food deprivation occurred early in development, the tadpoles caught up to the size of controls, but an extended developmental time would increase the risk of predation or habitat loss. If food reductions occur late in development, perhaps magnified by pond desiccation, tadpoles are stimulated to metamorphose at the same time as controls but at a smaller size. The bioenergetic composition of tadpoles at metamorphosis is unaffected by time of food deprivation.

    Notes: Abstract Concentrations of Na, K, Cl, Ca and Mg were measured in the spermatophoric plasma and certain other body fluids of Octopus dofleini martini. The most striking change associated with maturation and passage of the spermatophore in the male reproductive tract, was a decline in the concentration of NaCl in the spermatophoric plasma. This was completely reversed during the spermatophoric reaction owing to influx of salt from the seawater. The outer tunic of a spermatophore undergoing spermatophoric reaction is also permeable to other substances. It allows an influx of inorganic phosphate and glucose, and an efflux of organically bound nitrogen, carbohydrate and aminosugar.

    Notes: Abstract Mussels, Mytilus edulis planulatus, were collected from Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia, in February 1984, to test the assumption that they are “integrators” of cadmium pollution. Groups of mussels were subjected to the same average dose of cadmium (21 μg l-1), administered according to different dosing regimes over 4 wk (Regimes 1, 2, 3, 5); other groups received twice the average dose (42 μg l-1) in half the time (Regime 4). During each regime, the mussels were exposed to the different cadmium concentrations for one week at each concentration. Nominally, the regimes were: (1) 36 μg (Wk 1) to 26 μg (Wk 2) to 16 μg (Wk 3) to 6 μg (Wk 4) Cd l-1; (2) 6 to 16 to 26 to 36 μg Cd l-1; (3) 21 to 21 to 21 to 21 μg Cd l-1; (4) 42 to 42 μg Cd l-1; (5) 42 to 42 μg Cd l-1 to background (〈0.5 μg) to background. Differences in cadmium accumulation by mussels from Regimes 1 and 4 were not statistically significant, nor were differences in accumulation between mussels from Regimes 2 and 3. However, mussels from Regimes 1 and 4 had accumulated significantly more cadmium than had mussels from Regimes 2 and 3. Accumulation by mussels from Regime 5 was not significantly different from that by mussels from any of the other regimes. These results suggest that, at least for cadmium, the assumption that mussels are “integrators” of pollution should be treated with caution. They also have implications with regard to the quantitative biological monitoring of pollution. For example, even in a carefully controlled monitoring program, using mussels of standard size and condition, significant differences in cadmium content between mussels need not indicate exposure to different levels of contamination. Rather, these differences could reflect differences in the regime by which the contamination was received.
