    Notes: Abstract Globin genes from theCaenorhabditis speciesbriggsae andremanei were identified and compared with a previously describedC. elegans globin gene. The encoded globins share between 86% and 93% amino acid identity, with most of the changes in or just before the putative B helix.C. remanei was found to have two globin alleles,Crg1-1 andCrgl-2. The coding sequence for each is interrupted by a single intron in the same position. The exons of the two genes are only 1 % divergent at the nucleotide level and encode identical polypeptides. In contrast, intron sequence divergence is 16% and numerous insertions and deletions have significantly altered the size and content of both introns. Genetic crosses show thatCrg1-1 andCrgl-2 segregate as alleles. Homozygous lines for each allele were constructed and northern analysis confirmed the expression of both alleles. These data reveal an unusual situation wherein two alleles encoding identical proteins have diverged much more rapidly in their introns than the silent sites of their coding sequences, suggesting multiple gene conversion events.

    Notes: Abstract The present status of 38 couples who had been treated at a clinic for sexual dysfunction 3 years previously was determined by a self-report assessment battery. The battery consisted of the Sexual Interaction Inventory, the Locke-Wallace Marriage Inventory, and the Sexual History Form completed at pretreatment, immediately posttreatment, 3 months after treatment, and at 3-year follow-up. An additional Follow-up Questionnaire was completed at the 3-year point only. At 3-year follow-up, analysis of data by diagnostic category indicated that sexual desire dysfunction for both men and women was particularly resistant to sustained behavioral change. Men with erectile difficulty reported significant improvement in their ability to maintain erections during intercourse but not in their ability to achieve erections prior to intercourse. Data from men with premature ejaculation revealed some immediate significant posttherapy gains, which, with the exception of length of foreplay, were not sustained at 3-year follow-up. For women with global inorgasmia, a significant increase in orgasmic response was reported. Data from women with situational orgasmic difficulties indicated some success in improving frequency of orgasm through masturbation and through genital caress; however, these changes did not reach statistical significance. Across all diagnostic categories, both men and women respondents reported increased satisfaction in their sexual relationship. Satisfaction in the marital relationship showed a more varied response pattern.

    Notes: Summary The morphology of growth cones from identified neurons ofAplysia californica was analysed both with video-enhanced contrast differential-interference contrast (VEC-DIC) microscopy, and through serial electron microscopic reconstructions of the same growth cones. The largest structures seen in the living growth cones, the large irregular refractile bodies (LIRBs), were shown in electron micrographs to be unique structures, composed predominantly of dense-core vesicles but including mitochondria and smooth membrane profiles. The LIRBs were stratified in the growth cones, occurring predominantly in sections distant from the substrate and relatively devoid of microtubules. VEC-DIC observations showed that LIRBs formed in the peripheral regions of the organelle-rich central growth cone, and grew in size through fusion with other LIRBs, accumulating into a large central mass in more proximal regions. The distribution of microtubules and LIRBs and the movements of LIRB suggest that there is an overall circulatory pattern in the growth cones, with the delivery of new vesicles occurring at distal areas close to the substrate, and the accumulation and retrograde processing of organelles occurring in more proximal areas away from adhesive contacts.
