Notes: Summary A magnetic method for direct noninvasive measurements of human hepatic storage iron with a SQUID susceptometer has been developed. In vivo magnetic andin vitro chemical determinations of liver nonheme iron are closely correlated. Magnetic measurements of iron stores are clinically useful in the diagnosis of disorders of iron metabolism.

Notes: Abstract Protection from the deleterious effects of the interaction of environmental stress and salicylate by calcium supplement was investigated in 96 pigmented rats. Within a 2×2×4 factorial design, rats were assigned to groups defined by:A) ad lib access to 1) plain tap water, or 2) 50 mM calcium chloride solution;B) exposure to stressors consisting of daily 10 h periods of 1) 98 dB SPL noise, or 2) confinement precluding movements;C) daily injections of 233, 350, or 410 mg/kg of sodium salicylate or the saline vehicle. For subjects maintained on tap water, weight loss and mortality increased with salicylate levels, with all subjects dying in the group drinking water and injected with 410 mg/kg. Calcium protected all of the subjects in the noise stress group but not in the confined group.

Notes: Summary Survival as a function of salicylate dose and the intensity of environmental noise was investigated in 150 adult female pigmented rats. Rats were assigned to groups (n=6/group) defined by combinations of salicylate levels from 0- (saline) to 300 mg/kg, injected subcutaneously, and noise levels from ambient noise to 98 dB SPL, presented daily for 10-h periods for up to 17 days. Mortality occurred in groups exposed to the higher combinations of salicylate and noise.

Notes: Summary Nineteen normal male volunteers underwent a 10-h glucose clamp study to examine the duration and mechanism of insulin resistance after hypoglycaemia. Dextrose delivery by the Biostator to maintain the target blood glucose level fell below baseline 2 h after induction of hypoglycaemia and remained suppressed for at least 7 h after insulin hypoglycaemia. Insulin secretion as manifested by C-peptide levels remained suppressed for 3–4 h after insulin hypoglycaemia despite return of blood glucose to baseline by 90 min. Glucose kinetic data (3-3H-glucose) performed in six of the subjects indicated that the prolonged insulin resistance was due to significantly increased hepatic glucose production and to suppressed glucose utilisation, persisting for at least 4 h after counterregulatory hormone levels had returned to normal. Post-hypoglycaemic insulin resistance as determined by dextrose delivery was markedly attenuated and the rise in hepatic glucose output totally eliminated in five hypopituitary subjects without growth hormone or cortisol responses to hypoglycaemia. We conclude that post-hypoglycaemic insulin resistance occurs in non-diabetic subjects and persists for at least 7 h following hypoglycaemia. This prolonged insulin resistance is largely related to release of growth hormone and cortisol.

Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: Transrectal ultrasound is the most accurate means of assessing the degree of invasion for rectal neoplasms. A learning curve for performing and interpreting these studies exists, but it is unknown how long or steep it is. We reviewed our initial results with transrectal ultrasound to determine our accuracy and to define the learning curve. METHODS: All patients undergoing transrectal ultrasound during our initial 30 months of experience were included. Each patient was staged with transrectal ultrasound and, after resection, the histopathologic stage was compared with transrectal ultrasound staging. The accuracy of transrectal ultrasound was calculated at intervals as experience was gained. RESULTS: A total of 42 examinations were performed on 41 neoplasms in 41 patients. Comparison between transrectal ultrasound and the pathologic stage could be made in 36 studies. Overall accuracy of degree of wall invasion was 78 percent. Overstaging occurred with eight neoplasms, and one lesion was understaged. Accuracy of transrectal ultrasound staging improved with time: 58 percent of the initial 12 studies were staged correctly compared with 87.5 percent accuracy in the remaining 24 examinations (P=0.048). CONCLUSION: A definite learning curve was apparent. We conclude that transrectal ultrasound is a relatively simple procedure to learn and, once a moderate degree of experience is gained, should be routinely incorporated into the evaluation of rectal neoplasms.

Notes: Abstract The behaviour of members of a group of rhesus monkeys was observed in experimentally created, competitive feeding situations. Socially dominant members of the group tended to start eating before lower-ranking subjects, and generally ate more. Dominants sometimes used aggression to control access to food, but overall, intermediate-ranking monkeys were involved in most agonistic episodes. Non-dominant subjects improved their feeding performance when food was presented in three piles rather than one pile, often by snatching food and consuming it away from the pile. These general patterns were less evident when realistic snake models were placed on some of the food piles. Feeding was disrupted by the presence of snakes, but notably, subordinates risked feeding in these conditions. Piles containing preferred foods and snakes were eaten from, but a low-preference food (carrot) under snakes went untouched by all subjects. The results suggest that group-members evaluate potential risks and benefits of competing for a restricted resource, and that dominance status, while an important factor, is only one element in the equation.

Notes: Abstract Let N and α be integers larger than 1. Define an orbit to be the collection of residues in $$Z_N^* $$ generated byiteratively applying $$x \to x^\alpha $$ mod N to an element $$x \in Z_N^* $$ which eventually maps back to itself. An orbit's length is the number of distinct residues in the orbit. When N isa large bicomposite integer, such as is commonly used in many cryptographicapplications, and when certain prime factorizations related to N are known, all orbit lengths and the number of orbits of each possible length can beefficiently computed using the results presented. If the required integerfactorizations are only partially known, the risk that a randomly selectedperiodic element might produce an orbit shorter than some (typically large)divisor of $$\phi (\phi (N))$$ can be bounded. The information needed to producesuch a bound is fully available when the prime factors of N are generatedusing the prime generation algorithm defined in Maurer maur. Resultspresented can assist in choosing wisely a modulus N for the Blum, Blum, andShub pseudo-random bit generator. If N is a bicomposite RSA modulus, theanalysis shows how to quantify the risk posed by an iterated encryptionattack.
