    Description: We investigated the taxonomic composition and abundance of under-ice fauna (metazoans 〉300 µm) at fourteen stations in the Arctic Ocean, north of Svalbard. Sampling was conducted during spring in 2015 with the Surface and Under Ice Trawl (SUIT) and the catch of the plankton net (300 µm mesh size) was investigated for under-ice fauna. Abundances of individuals/m² were calculated from counting numbers.

    Description: Surface and Under Ice Trawl (SUIT) deployments have been carried out during five expeditions (PS80, PS81, PS89, PS92, PS106) on board of the RV Polarstern in both the Arctic and Antarctic between 2012 and 2017. The SUIT is equipped with a CTD probe (Sea and Sun Technology CTD75M memory probe) to measure surface water temperature and salinity at a sampling interval of 0.1s, later interpolated to a 0.5m grid. A fluorometer integrated in the CTD allows surface chl a measurements and an altimeter allows to measure the distance of the SUIT from the ice underside. An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP; Nortek Aquadopp Profiler) with three acoustic beams is used to measure water inflow speed and direction, pitch and roll angles, and pressure. Information on pressure, distance from the ice above, and pitch and roll have been combined to obtain sea-ice draft on a 0.5m grid. Hyperspectral measurements have been performed with Ramses spectral radiometers (Trios, Rastede, Germany), then integrated over the PAR range. Positions are obtained from the ship GPS and used to retrieve speed and length of trawling.

    Description: This dataset summarizes allometric measurements on zooplankton and nekton species performed in the framework of the Dutch and German ICEFLUX projects. Measurements were performed on 639 individuals of 15 species from the Southern Ocean and 2374 individuals of 14 species from the Arctic Ocean, including euphausiids, fish, pelagic and ice-associated amphipods, cnidarians, salps, siphonophores, chaetognaths and a copepod. Animals were collected during three expeditions in the Southern Ocean (winter and summer) and three expeditions in the Arctic Ocean (spring and summer). In addition to measurements on length and mass, the sizes of body parts were measured, such as carapaces, eyes, heads, telsons, tails and otoliths.

    Description: We investigated the biomass, carbon demand, and secondary production of sea-ice meiofauna (here heterotrophs 〉10μm) at eight ice stations on Arctic pack ice north of Svalbard. Sampling was conducted during spring 2015 by sea-ice coring. The biomass (µgCm-²) for sea-ice meiofauna taxa was calculated by multiplying abundances (ind. m-²) of each taxon obtained from Ehrlich et al. (2020) (https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2020.00452) by the carbon content per individual of this taxon. The mass-specific ingestion rate of each taxon was multiplied by the biomass of that taxon at every station to determine the carbon demand per day. For the calculation of sea-ice meiofauna secondary production all production-biomass (P/B) ratios were obtained from Forest et al. (2014) (https://doi.org/10.5194/bg-11-2827-2014).
