Notes: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the reproducibility of biopsy grades at various tissue depths in Sjögren’s syndrome. The biopsy grades of 38 minor salivary gland biopsies were examined at 6 μm, 50 μm, 100 μm, 150 μm, 200 μm, and 250 μm tissue depths. Tissue sections were stained with routine hematoxylin and eosin, graded I–IV, and compared with the initial “baseline” biopsy grade. The majority of the biopsies showed a wide range of grade variability at all depths. No tissue depth was consistently reproducible for any grade (P〈inlineGraphic alt="geqslant R: gt-or-equal, slanted" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:09042512:JOP300705:ges" location="ges.gif"/〉0.41, 0.64, 0.91, and 0.20, respectively). The difference between baseline grades and grades of deeper sections was sufficient to impact the diagnosis of Sjögren’s syndrome in approximately 60% of the biopsies (P〈0.001). The overall result of this study suggests that examination of multiple sections of minor salivary gland biopsies is advisable to improve the reliability of the grade when evaluating Sjögren’s syndrome.

Notes: Abstract: Oral pemphigoid, defined as cicatricial pemphigoid limited to the oral cavity, is a clinical subset of cicatricial pemphigoid. Like cicatricial pemphigoid, it occurs mostly in middle-aged women and it is uncommon in children under 20 years of age. There are 11 cases of childhood cicatricial pemphigoid published previously in the English language literature, and four of them are oral pemphigoid patients. We present a case of the youngest oral pemphigoid patient reported yet. Because of the rareness of cicatricial pemphigoid in children, delayed diagnosis and treatment have been shown in many cases reported earlier. Clinical awareness and early recognition are, therefore, emphasized.

Notes: A “freeze-break” technique (Trombitás, K.: Acta Biochim. Biophys. Hung. 6:419-427, 1971) and immunoelectron microscopy were used to study the elastic properties of titin filaments. Small bundles of freshly prepared rabbit psoas muscle fibers were quickly frozen and broken under liquid nitrogen to fracture sarcomeres in planes perpendicular to the filament axis, in each of various regions along the sarcomere. The still-frozen specimens were thawed during fixation to allow elastic filaments to retract. The broken specimens were then labelled with monoclonal anti-titin antibodies against an unique epitope in the I-band.The titin epitopes were normally positioned symmetrically about the Z-line. However, in sarcomeres broken at the A-I junction, the epitopes no longer remained symmetrical: the titin filaments in the broken half-sarcomere retracted, independently of the thin filaments, forming a dense band just near the Z-line. The retracted density apparently did not reach the Z-line; retraction stopped at the level of the so-called N1-line. In sarcomeres broken at the Z-line level, the titin filaments retracted in the opposite direction. In this case the titin epitope retracted all the way to the ends of the thick filaments. It appears then that titin molecules form elastic filaments that are independent of thin filaments in most of the I-band. Near the Z-line, however, the titin filaments either have an inelastic domain or associate firmly with the thin filaments at the N1-line level. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Southern pine samples with different dimensions and bulk densities were impregnated with the multifunctional monomer ethyl α-hydroxymethylacrylate (EHMA) and 5 mol % of fluorinated or nonfluorinated crosslinking agent. The maximum impregnation yield (105% by weight) was achieved under vacuum with good improvement of water repellency.Impregnation with EHMA plus another multifunctional monomer 2-vinyl-4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolin-5-one (vinyl azlactone) was carried out to improve the mechanical properties of wood samples. Water repellency was also improved depending on the amount of vinyl azlactone in the monomer solution. A maximum of 41% antiswell efficiency (ASE) was obtained by impregnation with a 9 : 1 w/w mixture of EHMA and vinyl azlactone. Improvements of 38-54% in impact strength and 27-44% in compression modulus were achieved depending on the relative amount of vinyl azlactone incorporated. FT-IR and solution or solid-state NMR spectroscopy were used for chemical characterization of the polymers themselves and the wood-polymer composites.

Notes: We present a stereotaxic atlas of the brain of the trumpet-tailed rat or degu (Octodon degus), an hystricomorph rodent native to Chile and one which has become increasingly popular as a research animal, among other things because of its use as a model for diabetic catarcts and its tendency to become hyperglycemic. The atlas contains 38 transverse and two sagittal sections of the brain covering pros-, mes-, and rhombencephalon, as well as diagrams of the brain's surface anatomy. It was constructed from brains of young adult male degus but can be used readily in studies of adult females, since there is no apparent sexual dimorphism in the brain size of this rodent. Ninety percent of 40 experimental lesions used to check the accuracy of the atlas were correctly placed. The fore- and midbrain of the degu are generally more compact than corresponding regions of the brain in the laboratory rat (suborder Myomorpha) and the guinea pig (another hystricomorph). The amygdaloid complex extends further forward in the telencephalon. Major mesencephalic nuclei and fiber tracts are more rostral in position. However, superior and inferior colliculi are much longer in degus than rats. The basic organization of the rhombencephalon is similar in degus and rats, although there are clearcut differences in the length or size of some hindbrain nuclei. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Some copolymers which contain either aldehyde or ketone carbonyl groups have been treated with phosphorus trichloride and then in sequence with acetic acid and water. On the basis of phosphorus analyses of the resulting products, α-hydroxyphosphonic acid groups have been introduced in amounts ranging from zero to 100% of the theoretical amount. These phosphorus containing polymers with 2% or more of phosphorus are somewhat flame resistant.
