Abstract: Temperature stresses, including low- and high-temperature stresses, are the main abiotic stresses affecting rice yield. Due to global climate change, the impact of temperature pressure on rice yield is gradually increasing, which is also a major concern for researchers. In this study, an H1 histone in Oryza sativa (OsHis1.1, LOC_Os04g18090) was cloned, and its role in rice’s response to temperature stresses was functionally characterized. The GUS staining analysis of OsHis1.1 promoter-GUS transgenic rice showed that OsHis1.1 was widely expressed in various rice tissues. Transient expression demonstrated that OsHis1.1 was localized in the nucleus. The overexpression of OsHis1.1 reduces the tolerance to temperature stress in rice by inhibiting the expression of genes that are responsive to heat and cold stress. Under stress conditions, the POD activity and chlorophyll and proline contents of OsHis1.1-overexpression rice lines were significantly lower than those of the wild type, while the malondialdehyde content was higher than that of the wild type. Compared with Nip, OsHis1.1-overexpression rice suffered more serious oxidative stress and cell damage under temperature stress. Furthermore, OsHis1.1-overexpression rice showed changes in agronomic traits.

Abstract: As the human population grows rapidly, food shortages will become an even greater problem; therefore, increasing crop yield has become a focus of rice breeding programs. The maize gene, ZmDUF1645, encoding a putative member of the DUF1645 protein family with an unknown function, was transformed into rice. Phenotypic analysis showed that enhanced ZmDUF1645 expression significantly altered various traits in transgenic rice plants, including increased grain length, width, weight, and number per panicle, resulting in a significant increase in yield, but a decrease in rice tolerance to drought stress. qRT-PCR results showed that the expression of the related genes regulating meristem activity, such as MPKA, CDKA, a novel crop grain filling gene (GIF1), and GS3, was significantly changed in the ZmDUF1645-overexpression lines. Subcellular colocalization showed that ZmDUF1645 was primarily localized on cell membrane systems. Based on these findings, we speculate that ZmDUF1645, like the OsSGL gene in the same protein family, may regulate grain size and affect yield through the cytokinin signaling pathway. This research provides further knowledge and understanding of the unknown functions of the DUF1645 protein family and may serve as a reference for biological breeding engineering to increase maize crop yield.

Abstract: The co-application of water, fertilizer, and air is a new water-saving irrigation method based on drip irrigation technology, which can effectively alleviate the phenomenon of soil rhizosphere hypoxia, improve water and fertilizer utilization efficiency, and inhibit the clogging of irrigation equipment in drip irrigation systems. The performance of drip irrigation systems is one of the important factors affecting the effectiveness of the co-application of water, fertilizer, and air. However, the impact of factors such as the aeration method, fertilization device, and working parameters on the performance of drip irrigation systems for the co-application of water, fertilizer, and air is still unclear. Therefore, based on two typical aeration methods, i.e., micro-nano and Venturi aeration, the performance of a drip irrigation system under the co-application of water, fertilizer, and air was studied by comparing and analyzing the effects of different aeration methods, working pressures of the drip irrigation system, and the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of fertilizer irrigation on the spatial distribution uniformity of water, fertilizer, and air in the drip irrigation pipeline network. The results showed that the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of fertilization irrigation had no significant impact on system performance, while the working pressure significantly affected system performance. Compared with the effective effect of Venturi aeration on system performance, micro-nano aeration can significantly affect drip irrigation system performance and effectively improve drip irrigation system performance. The micro-nano-aerated drip irrigation system with the co-application of water, fertilizer, and air under a working pressure of 0.1 MPa has better system performance. The research results are of great significance for revealing the mechanism underlying the impact of the co-application of water, fertilizer, and air on the performance of drip irrigation systems and constructing efficient drip irrigation technology for the co-application of water, fertilizer, and air.

Abstract: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising noninvasive medical technology that has been approved for the treatment of a variety of diseases, including bacterial and fungal infections, skin diseases, and several types of cancer. In recent decades, many photosensitizers have been developed and applied in PDT. However, PDT is still limited by light penetration depth, although many near-infrared photosensitizers have emerged. The chemiluminescence-mediated PDT (CL-PDT) system has recently received attention because it does not require an external light source to achieve targeted PDT. This review focuses on the rational design of organic CL-PDT systems. Specifically, PDT types, light wavelength, the chemiluminescence concept and principle, and the design of CL-PDT systems are introduced. Furthermore, chemiluminescent fraction examples, strategies for combining chemiluminescence with PDT, and current cellular and animal applications are highlighted. Finally, the current challenges and possible solutions to CL-PDT systems are discussed.

Abstract: Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the main food crops for human survival, and its yield is often restricted by abiotic stresses. Drought and soil salinity are among the most damaging abiotic stresses affecting today’s agriculture. Given the importance of abscisic acid (ABA) in plant growth and abiotic stress responses, it is very important to identify new genes involved in ABA signal transduction. We screened a drought-inducing gene containing about 158 amino acid residues from the transcriptome library of rice exposed to drought treatment, and we found ABA-related cis-acting elements and multiple drought-stress-related cis-acting elements in its promoter sequence. The results of real-time PCR showed that OsMLP423 was strongly induced by drought and salt stresses. The physiological and biochemical phenotype analysis of transgenic plants confirmed that overexpression of OsMLP423 enhanced the tolerance to drought and salt stresses in rice. The expression of OsMLP423-GFP fusion protein indicated that OsMLP423 was located in both the cell membrane system and nucleus. Compared with the wild type, the overexpressed OsMLP423 showed enhanced sensitivity to ABA. Physiological analyses showed that the overexpression of OsMLP423 may regulate the water loss efficiency and ABA-responsive gene expression of rice plants under drought and salt stresses, and it reduces membrane damage and the accumulation of reactive oxygen species. These results indicate that OsMLP423 is a positive regulator of drought and salinity tolerance in rice, governing the tolerance of rice to abiotic stresses through an ABA-dependent pathway. Therefore, this study provides a new insight into the physiological and molecular mechanisms of OsMLP423-mediated ABA signal transduction participating in drought and salt stresses.

Abstract: One of the cores of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) production is to precisely measure the requirement of phosphorus (P) fertilization for optimizing seed yield, grower profits, P-use efficiency, and reducing environmental risk. Therefore, critical P concentration (Pc) was proposed as a suitable analytical tool to assess the flax P nutrition status. Four field experiments, with five P applications (0, 40, 80, 120, 160 kg P2O5 ha−1) and four cultivars (Longyaza 1, Longya 14, Lunxuan 2, and Dingya 22) were conducted from the 2017 to 2019 seasons. The capsule Pc dilution curve based on capsule dry matter (CDM) was described by Pc = 2.84 × CDM−0.22 (R2 = 0.87, p 〈 0.01), CDM ranging from 0.60 to 4.17 t ha−1. The P nutrition index (PNI) exhibited a significant positive relationship with P application rate. In addition, the relative seed yield was closely related to PNI. Those results validate that the capsule Pc dilution curve can be an alternative and more rapid tool to diagnose flax P status to support P fertilization precise decisions during the reproductive growth of flax in northwest China.

Abstract: Flaxseed, which is rich in lignan, α-linolenic acid, dietary fiber, and several minerals, is an important food and nutrition source. In this study, trials were conducted at Yongdeng over two consecutive years (2018 and 2019), with three cultivars (Longyaza 1, Longya 14, and Zhangya 2) and five application rates of phosphorus (P) (0, 40, 80, 120, and 160 kg P2O5 ha−1). We examined the effects of P on the seed yield, and the yields and contents of dietary fiber, lignan, iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and copper (Cu). We found that P fertilization positively influenced yields of seed and levels of lignan, Fe, and Cu, showing average increases of 15, 20, 24, and 28%, respectively, compared with plants not given P over the 2-year study. Additionally, P fertilization resulted in increased concentrations of Fe and Cu in flaxseed of 8 and 2%, respectively. P fertilization negatively affected the levels of dietary fiber, Zn, and Mn, which were reduced by 7, 11, and 7%, respectively, in comparison with the control. In conclusion, the results demonstrated that appropriate P application is an effective strategy for improving yields of seed, lignan, Fe, and Cu in flax production and for enhancing concentrations of Fe and Cu in flax.

Abstract: DNA methylation has been found to be involved in sex determination and differentiation in many aquaculture species. The Ussuri catfish (Pseudobagrus ussuriensis) is a popular aquaculture fish in China with high economic value in which male-biased sex dimorphism was observed in terms of body size and body weight. In this study, DNA methylation-sensitive RAD sequencing (Methyl-RAD) was used to explore the epigenetic difference between adult male and female samples in brain and gonad tissues. In brain tissues, 5,442,496 methylated cytosine sites were found and 9.94% of these sites were from symmetric CCGG or CCWGG sites. Among these sites, 321 differential DNA methylation sites (DMSs) in 171 genes were identified, while in gonad tissues, 4,043,053 methylated cytosines sites were found in total and 11.70% of them were from CCGG or CCWGG. Among these sites, 78 differential DNA methylation sites were found which were located in 64 genes. We also found several sex-determination genes among these differential methylated genes, such as amh, gsdf and hsd11b2 in brain tissues and slco3a1, socs2 and trim47 in gonad tissues. These results provided evidence for understanding the function of DNA methylation in the sex differentiation in Pseudobagrus ussuriensis, which further deepens the relationship between gene regulation and epigenetics.
