Description: Cigarette smoking causes persistent lung inflammation that is mainly regulated by redox-sensitive pathways. We have previously reported that cigarette smoke (CS) activates reactive oxygen species- (ROS-) sensitive mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs)/nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling leading to induction of lung inflammation. Paeonol, the main phenolic compound present in the Chinese herb Paeonia suffruticosa, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, whether paeonol has similar beneficial effects against CS-induced lung inflammation remains unclear. Using a murine model, we showed that chronic CS exposure for 4 weeks caused pulmonary inflammatory infiltration, increased lung vascular permeability, elevated lung levels of chemokines, cytokines, and 4-hydroxynonenal (an oxidative stress biomarker), and induced lung inflammation; all of these CS-induced events were suppressed by chronic treatment with paeonol. Using human bronchial epithelial cells (HBECs), we demonstrated that cigarette smoke extract (CSE) sequentially increased extracellular and intracellular levels of ROS, activated the MAPKs/NF-κB signaling, and induced interleukin-8 (IL-8); all these CSE-induced events were inhibited by paeonol pretreatment. Our findings suggest a novel role for paeonol in alleviating the oxidative stress and lung inflammation induced by chronic CS exposure in vivo and in suppressing CSE-induced IL-8 in vitro via its antioxidant function and an inhibition of the MAPKs/NF-κB signaling.

Description: Ordinary differential equations usefully describe the behavior of a wide range of dynamic physical systems. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) method has been considered an effective tool for solving the engineering optimization problems for ordinary differential equations. This paper proposes a modified hybrid Nelder-Mead simplex search and particle swarm optimization (M-NM-PSO) method for solving parameter estimation problems. The M-NM-PSO method improves the efficiency of the PSO method and the conventional NM-PSO method by rapid convergence and better objective function value. Studies are made for three well-known cases, and the solutions of the M-NM-PSO method are compared with those by other methods published in the literature. The results demonstrate that the proposed M-NM-PSO method yields better estimation results than those obtained by the genetic algorithm, the modified genetic algorithm (real-coded GA (RCGA)), the conventional particle swarm optimization (PSO) method, and the conventional NM-PSO method.

Description: In power systems, determining the values of time dial setting (TDS) and the plug setting (PS) for directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) is an extremely constrained optimization problem that has been previously described and solved as a nonlinear programming problem. Optimization coordination problems of near-end faults and far-end faults occurring simultaneously in circuits with various topologies, including fixed and variable network topologies, are considered in this study. The aim of this study was to apply the Nelder-Mead (NM) simplex search method and particle swarm optimization (PSO) to solve this optimization problem. The proposed NM-PSO method has the advantage of NM algorithm, with a quicker movement toward optimal solution, as well as the advantage of PSO algorithm in the ability to obtain globally optimal solution. Neither a conventional PSO nor the proposed NM-PSO method is capable of dealing with constrained optimization problems. Therefore, we use the gradient-based repair method embedded in a conventional PSO and the proposed NM-PSO. This study used an IEEE 8-bus test system as a case study to compare the convergence performance of the proposed NM-PSO method and a conventional PSO approach. The results demonstrate that a robust and optimal solution can be obtained efficiently by implementing the proposal.

Description: In the process of inspection for the electricity transmission equipment using flying robots, an automatic way to find the best viewpoint to get the high quality of image would be beneficial to observe the state of the electricity transmission equipment. Finding the best viewpoint belongs to the viewpoint selection problem. A strategy is proposed in this paper to find the best viewpoint for the electricity transmission equipment inspection, according to which the candidate viewpoints can be generated based on the 3D model of the equipment. Then a scoring function is constructed which combines three factors including the amount of the information, the viewing quality, and the visibility of the information to evaluate the quality of the candidate viewpoint. Finally, the best viewpoint can be selected from all of candidate viewpoints according to the scoring function. The proposed algorithm is tested on the experiment to demonstrate its effectiveness.
