Notes: This study was designed to evaluate the hypothesis that impaired brain angiotensin signal termination contributes to the sustained blood pressure elevations noted in the genetically hypertensive rat model of human essential hypertension. A technique that combined the intracerebroventricular injection of [125I]angiotensins, followed by focused microwave fixation to stop all peptidase activity and subsequent HPLC analyses, was used for determining half-lives of [I25I]angiotensin II and [125I]angiotensin III in the ventricular space. The results indicate that the spontaneously hypertensive rat evidenced significantly longer half-lives for intracerebroventricularly injected [125I]angiotensin II over those measured for the Wistar-Kyoto and Sprague-Dawley normotensive rat strains: 45.0, 27.2, and 25.0 s, respectively. This was also true for intracerebroventricularly administered [125I]angiotensin III: 19.5, 11.4, and 9.0 s, respectively. These results support the notion that a dysfunction in central aminopeptidase activity in the spontaneously hypertensive rat may result in prolonged half-lives of endogenously synthesized angiotensins II and III, which are known to serve as ligands at central angiotensin receptors responsible for the control of cardiovascular function. The extended half-lives of these ligands may contribute to the sustained elevations in blood pressure observed in this animal model.

Notes: Abstract: This study compared the metabolism of [125I]angiotensin II (AII), [125I]angiotensin III (AIII), and [125I]Sar1,Ile8-AII (SI-AII) in the vascular and cerebroventricular compartments. Using HPLC methods to monitor degradation the following t½, values were established in the vascular compartment: AII, 12.7 ± 1.4 s; AIII, 16.3 ± 0.7 s; and SI-AII, 100.7 ± 7.3 s. HPLC analysis also revealed that [125I]AII is converted in an obligatory manner to [125I]AIII during its degradation sequence. Cerebrospinal fluid contained no degradative capacity for [125I]AII but exhibited a significant capacity to degrade [125I]AIII. A technique that combined the intracerebroventricular injection of [125I]angiotensins followed by focused microwave fixation to stop all peptidase activity was used to determine the half-life of [125I]angiotensins in the ventricular space. Results indicated very rapid metabolism of angiotensins with the following t½ values: AII, 23.0 s; and AIII, 7.7 s. This extremely rapid, differential, and sequential metabolism of AII and AIII in two relevant body fluid compartments underscores the need for caution when interpreting data derived from intravascular and intracerebroventricular application of angiotensins. In addition the faster metabolism of AIII than AII in the ventricular space indicates that the actual potency of AIII at central angiotensin receptors is being underestimated.

Notes: A totally nurse-dependent charging system developed specifically for the labor and delivery suite at the University of Maryland Medical System is described fn the article. This easy and effective method of charging was incorporated into an already existing patient census and classification system. The number of relative value units has increased by more than 30%, and the amount of revenue billed has increased by more than $800,000 in the first 10 months after implementation.

Notes: A definite algal succession pattern was established for all 3 years of study. Volume-based phytoplankton density and chlorophyll concentration decreased down-reservoir. However, the depth of the euphotic zone increased down-reservoir as silt settled out. Consequently, the euphotic zone standing crops were greatest mid-reservoir. Insufficient light penetration was established as the principal limiting factor to primary production in the upper end of the reservoir. Decreased primary production in the lower end of the reservoir did not appear to be due to nutrient limitation. Comparison of sampling periods common to all years of the study showed that estimated net primary production increased 84% in 1970 over 1968.

Notes: A serological technique was used to demonstrate that one species of trichopteran and three species of plecopteran nymphs were feeding on stream-dwelling triclads. Observations on streams in Caernarvonshire, North Wales, suggested that, in general, these predators were not typical members of the fauna at springheads, where triclads were frequently abundant. In contrast, further downstream the presence of predators was considered to be one of a number of factors which contributed to lower population densities of triclads. However, two small stony streams were encountered where the plecopteran predator Dinocras cephalotes occurred in close proximity to stream-dwelling triclads from the springhead downwards. In one, both predators and prey were found at all stations but highest triclad numbers were recorded where predators were few. In the second stream the population density of the predator was higher, and here, triclads were very scarce on the undersides of stones and were almost entirely confined o t patches of moss. It appears that the predators may be both limiting the micro-distribution of the triclad and also perhaps feeding selectively on larger individuals since mature triclads were rare, except at the springhead.

Notes: Abstract This study examined the reliability and validity of an adapted version of the Separation Anxiety Test (SAT) for 8–12–year-old children. Clinical (N= 21) and nonclinical (N= 21) participants were compared on responses to the SAT coded using the Seattle scoring indices. Inter-rater reliability was established at an acceptable level, however, test-retest reliability and internal test construction were less satisfactory. Sample comparisons found the clinical participants described themselves as less securely attached and more avoidant of emotional expression than the control participants. The indices of attachment security were also related to various socioemotional aspects of functioning. In addition, the results indicated that describing “self” as different from a similar “other” child was significantly related to parental reports of poor social competence. Results are discussed in relation to an Attachment Theory framework as well as from a clinical perspective.

Notes: This paper presents information collected during a survey of stream-dwelling triclads in two CO ntrasted areas of North Wales. The first study area was located in Caernarvon-shire on the mainland of North Wales and included a mountainous region rising to over 1000 m with abundant cold springs. In contrast, the study area on the nearby island of Anglesey was characterized by relatively warm, slow-flowing streams passing through gently undulating land which did not rise above 153 m. The object of the survey was to collect background data so that suitable streams could be chosen for more intensive studies on factors determining the distribution and abundance of stream-dwelling triclads. Distribution maps for the commonly occurring species were prepared and observations on the relationship between stream source-type and triclad fauna were obtained. The possible role of interspecific competition was of particular interest in this study and the results of this second phase of the work will be presented in a later paper.

Notes: Recently, the concept of “collective efficacy” has been advanced to understand how communities exert control and provide support to reduce crime. In a similar way, we use the concept of “parental efficacy” to highlight the crime reducing effects associated with parents who support and control their youth. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY), we examine the inter-relationship between parental controls and supports and their joint influence on youthful misbehavior. The results show that (1) support and control are intertwined, and (2) that parental efficacy exerts substantive effects on adolescent delinquency for the sample as a whole and across varying age groups.

Notes: A continuous culture technique utilising a variant of Staphylococcus aureus 8325–4 containing transcriptional gene fusions was used to investigate the relationships between cell density (OD600), steady-state specific growth rate (μ) and expression of both agr (accessory gene regulator) and tst (toxic shock syndrome toxin-1). The expression of these genes was assessed by two single-copy independently arranged chromosomal-based reporter systems, β-galactosidase agr–P3 promoter fusion and a lux–tst promoter fusion. Cell density and specific agr expression were found to be positively correlated. In the model, the minimum cell density predicted to promote specific agr expression was an OD600 of 0.14, equivalent to 1.2×108 CFU ml−1. No direct relationship between cell density and specific tst expression was detected. Specific expressions of agr and tst were not correlated with specific growth rate and there appeared to be no direct link between agr and tst specific expression. The results support the hypothesis that agr is a functional unit of quorum sensing and that the amount of specific expression of tst is modulated independently of agr.
