Abstract: A new soft x-ray pulse height analyzer (PHA), based on a Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) linear array consisting of 15 SDD detectors, has been installed in the HT-7 tokamak. The energy resolution of 150–180 eV at photon energy of 6 keV is achieved for the SDD with Peltier cooling. The effective time response of the SDD PHA is 50 ms. The profiles of electron temperature and the intensity of metallic impurities can be obtained with a spatial resolution of 3 cm. The performance and first experimental results from the new PHA system are presented.

Abstract: The barely trapped suprathermal electrons can destabilize the internal kink mode when their density gradient is positive within the rational surface and the beta value of the suprathermal electrons exceeds a threshold value. With the assumption of two different models of energy distribution of the suprathermal electrons, the threshold beta value of the barely trapped suprathermal electrons, the real frequency, and the growth rate of the internal kink mode are found in this paper. The results are in reasonable agreement with the recent experimental observations on DIII-D tokamak [K. L. Wong, M. S. Chu, T. C. Luce et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 996 (2000)].

Abstract: A tangential x-ray diagnosis has been installed in the experimental advanced superconducting tokamakvacuum vessel for the study of fast magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) events. This system is based on absolute x-ray ultraviolet detectors with a collimator which is processed by laser machine. The first experimental results have proved its ability to measure the small-scale and transient MHD perturbations.

Abstract: Localized electron heating produced by electron cyclotron resonant heating (ECRH) system has been proven to be powerful tools for controlling sawtooth instabilities, because such system allows to directly modify the local plasma parameters that determine the evolution of sawtooth periods. In this paper, we present the experimental results carried out on experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) with regard to sawtooth period control via ECRH. The electron cyclotron heating system on EAST was capable of inject electron cyclotron wave toward certain locations inside or outside q = 1 magnetic surface on the poloidal cross section, which renders us able to investigate the evolution of sawtooth period against the ECRH deposition position. It is found that when ECRH deposition position is inside the q = 1 surface, the sawtooth oscillation is destabilized (characterized by reduced sawtooth period). So far, inside the q = 1 surface, there are not enough EAST experiment data that can reveal more detailed information about the relation between ECRH deposition position and sawtooth period. When ECRH deposition is outside the q = 1 surface, the sawtooth oscillation is stabilized (characterized by prolonged sawtooth period), and the sawtooth periods gradually decrease as ECRH deposition position sweeps away from q = 1 surface. The sawtooth periods reach maximum when ECRH deposition position falls around q = 1 surface. The magnetic shear at q = 1 surface is calculated to offer insights for the temporal evolution of sawtooth. The result has been found consistent with the Porcelli model.

Abstract: The response and current–voltage (I–V) characteristics of irradiated and non-irradiated silicon photodiode arrays (SPDAs) for use in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor camera are measured and compared. Irradiation experiments are carried out using a uranium–zirconium hydride pulsed reactor. The total equivalent 1 MeV neutron fluence with energy above 0.01 MeV is ∼9.89 × 1013 n cm−2. The output signal of the irradiated SPDA (XD2) shows a nonlinear trend during the irradiation experiment. The final signal is about 5.6% of the original one in the visible light region. Tests on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) show that the XD2 signal is 70%–80% of that of a non-irradiated SPDA (XD3). This indicates that irradiated SPDAs can still observe plasma radiation after exposure to 9.89 × 1013 n cm−2 neutron fluence. However, because the neutron fluence of external camera detectors will reach 1.4 × 1016 n cm−2 in D-T phase, the SPDAs might become unusable at some point. The responsivity ratio of irradiated and non-irradiated SPDAs is about 4%–20% from 7 to 13 keV. The degradation of responsivity is related to the energy level. After irradiation, the reversed dark current rises from 0.1 to 10 nA to a level of around 1 µA. In terms of tests of XD2 on EAST, zero bias is a good working condition for irradiated SPDAs.

Abstract: A neutron activation system (NAS) has been developed on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) for the investigation of time-integrated neutron yield. It is a robust neutron diagnostic with high precision and a wide dynamic range. Some high purity materials with a proper nuclear reaction energy threshold and cross section are tested as neutron detectors in the NAS, and they are delivered to the tokamak device by a pneumatic transfer system. The length of the pneumatic pipeline is about 50 m, and the transfer time ranges from 10 s to 20 s. The decay gamma rays of the activated samples are measured with a high-purity germanium spectrometer, and its detection efficiencies are 6.9% at 336 keV and 1.7% at 1779 keV, respectively. Indium and silicon samples with a reaction threshold of 0.3 MeV and 4.0 MeV, respectively, were successfully implemented in the diagnosis of DD and DT neutron yield in the EAST. The neutron flux of the NAS was compared with the count of the fission chamber in the EAST neutral beam injection experiment, and the DD neutron yield evaluated by the NAS ranges from 1.9 × 1012 n/shot to 5.9 × 1014 n/shot during recent experimental campaign.

Abstract: Oriented polycrystalline Nd1 − xTbxCo5 alloys are fabricated successfully by the magnetic field bonding technique, and magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) and rotating magnetocaloric effect (RMCE) have been studied systematically. Two successive spin-reorientation transitions (SRTs), “easy-plane” to “easy-cone” transition at TSR1 followed by “easy-cone” to “easy-axis” transition at TSR2, are observed. The SRT temperatures shift toward room temperature due to the enhancement of MCA by substituting Nd with Tb of a higher MCA constant. In addition, two competing mechanisms on MCA might be induced by substituting Nd with Tb, which leads to the nonlinear variation of RMCE. The RMCE and the working temperature range increase largely by substituting Nd with a small amount of Tb, e.g., the maximum rotating adiabatic temperature change ΔTrot increases by ∼60% from x = 0 to 0.1. The relatively large RMCE over a wide working temperature range (from 240 K to 310 K) makes x = 0.1 compound attractive candidate for rotating magnetic refrigeration around room temperature.

Abstract: High performance discharges under steady-state condition in the Hefei Tokamak-7 (HT-7) have been investigated. Lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) was used both for sustaining plasma current and current density profile control. The experiments demonstrated that features of ion Bernstein wave heating in controlling the electron pressure profile can be integrated into LHCD plasmas and the assist localization of LHCD. This local synergy effect was used to tailor the current density profile in a negative shear configuration and to control the internal transport barrier (ITB) under steady-state conditions. The high performance with a stationary ITB at the footprint of the minimum q and βNH89 & gt;2 was sustained for & gt;220 τE or & gt;20 τCR. The fraction of noninductive plasma current was larger than 80% in such discharges with considerable bootstrap current. The duration at H89 & gt;1.2 and βN∼1 has been extended to nearly 8 s, longer than 400 τE. More than 90% of the plasma current was sustained by LHCD and bootstrap current. High-plasma performance and sustaining time was limited by the magnetohydrodynamic instabilities and the recycling, which caused an uncontrollable rise of the electron density.

Abstract: We present high-power GaN-based blue superluminescent diodes (SLDs) with bend waveguides. The devices were grown on a c-plane GaN free-standing substrate by metal–organic chemical vapor deposition. Studies on waveguide design were conducted to increase the output power of SLDs. Low spectral modulation had been obtained by optimizing the bend angle of the ridge waveguide. An output power as high as 510 mW had been obtained for SLDs emitting at 441 nm with a full width at half maximum of 4.4 nm.

Abstract: A low energy neutral lithium beam source with energy about 6 keV and a neutral beam equivalent current of 20 μA/cm2 has been developed in ASIPP in order to measure the density gradient and the fluctuations in the edge plasma of the HT-6M tokamak. In the source, lithium ions are extracted from a solid emitter (β-eucryptite), focused in a two-tube immersion lens, and neutralized in a charge-exchange cell with sodium. This source operates in pulsed mode. The pulse length is adjustable from 10 to 100 ms.
