Bei N-substituierten 2-Methyl-piperidin-Derivaten tritt eine sterische Wechselwirkung auf, wenn die Methylgruppe äquatorial angeordnet ist. Es werden daher Konformationen mit axial-ständiger Methylgruppe bevorzugt, so bei den 2-Methyl-Verbindungen von N-Acetyl-, N-Methylmercaptothiocarbonyl- und syn-N-Nitroso-piperidin. Beim anti-N-Nitroso-2-methyl-piperidin wird eine teilweise Destabilisierung der Konformation mit äquatorialer Methylgruppe gefunden, nicht dagegen beim anti-2-Methyl-cyclohexanonoxim. Der Effekt entspricht vollständig dem an N-Acyl-piperidinosen beobachteten starken anomeren Effekt. Die Konformationsanalysen wurden durch Beobachtung der unterschiedlichen magnetischen Wirkung von N-Acetyl-, N-Methylmercaptothiocarbonyl-, N-Nitroso- und Oxim-Gruppe auf axiale und äquatoriale Protonen durchgeführt. Für alle Gruppen werden Modelle der magnetischen Anisotropie angegeben.
