Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Histologische Untersuchungen an sagittal orientierten Celloidinschnitten menschlicher Augen (44 Fälle) ergaben eindeutige Altersveränderungen am Ciliarepithel.
Notes: Summary Sagittal sections of 44 celloidin embedded human eyes were studied with regard to the age changes on the ciliary epithelium. The most pronounced histologic changes were seen in two regions, namely within the middle and posterior part of the ciliary valleys and within the area near the Ora serrata. In these regions, the zonula fibers, i.e., anteriorly the “stretching fibers” and posteriorly the “holding fibers”, are more firmly attached to the ciliary epithelium than elsewhere. Within these areas, the non-pigmented ciliary epitheliums shows additional cell groups, which become separated from the epithelial layer with increasing age. They finally form a new layer of isolated cell clusters, which were called “covering cells”. The number of these cells increases with age. They also showed tendency to spread out, but even in the highest age groups no complete, continuous cell layer was developed inside the non-pigmented ciliary epithelium. In the same areas, the pigmented epithelium reveals characteristic age changes. The diameter of the epithelial layer increases with age and the outer portions of the cells develop cluband pluglike protrusions against the stromal tissue, especially the so-called Mueller's reticulum. In this way the attachment of the epithelium at the ciliary body becomes stronger with age. On the other side of the ciliary epithelium as well the development of “covering cells” leads to an increased attachment of the epithelial layer to the zonula apparatus, due to the increased epithelial surface and the specific form of its connection to the zonular fiber bundles. These results are in good agreement with the new accommodation theory of Rohen and Rentsch (1969).

Notes: Summary The effect of various antibiotic drugs on wound-healing was investigated following parenteral administration in rats. The criterion for healing was the tensile strength of an incised and sutured healing skin wound. Therapeutic doses of gentamycin and tetracycline and sub-toxic doses of ampicillin demonstrated a significant inhibition of cicatrisation. The underlying biochemical mechanism involved in delays in the wound-healing process that are not attributable to bacterial causes is assumed to be the inhibition of protein synthesis, particularly that of connective tissue.

Notes: Abstract We present measurements of the electrical resistivity of Cu-La, Cu-Nd and Cu-Gd alloys in the liquid state. The experimental results indicate that the electrical resistivity of the RE metals is due to resonance scattering by the 5f and not the 4f states.

Notes: Summary In 62 Vervet eyes, which previously had been perfused with atropine- and pilocarpine-solutions and fixed in formalin (Bárány and Rohen, 1965; Lütjen, 1966), the functional behaviour of the ciliary epithelium was studied histometrically. In all stages of ciliary muscle contraction, the number of cell nuclei per surface unit showed no significant changes. Within the posterior part of the ciliary body and the pars plana region, the ciliary epithelium was neither stretched nor pushed together even after maximal contraction of the ciliary muscle. However, there exists an area with oblique, non-pigmented epithelial cells which moves posteriorly as a unit during accommodation. This is probably a result of the posterior columnar cells becoming slanted, while the anteriorly located oblique cells become simultaneously columnar. These morphologic changes were discussed in connection with the new theory of accommodation by Rohen and Rentsch (1969).
