Description / Table of Contents: Lichens are the predominant vegetation in the arctic environment, but the literature on them has remained scattered until now. This is the only detailed lichen guide and key for any region of arctic North America and will be an indispensable reference work for lichenologists, botanists, mycologists, and ecologists alike.

Notes: A patient is described who presented with a 2-year history of repeated sore throats and associated oral ulceration. These were shown to be due to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). There was no clinical evidence of involvement of any other system. We are not aware of a previous report of SLE presenting in this manner.

Notes: Three cases of secondary syphilis are described in whom a skin biopsy was performed. In all, the histology bore a striking resemblance to that of malignant lymphoid neoplasm. The classical cutaneous manifestations of secondary syphilis are usually easy to diagnose, especially when there is a good clinical history and the appropriate investigations are positive. If, however, the eruption is not characteristic, a skin biopsy may be carried out. We should like to report three cases where the histological appearances in isolation would have been misleading.

Notes: When iodoxuridine (IDU) – carried in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) – was topically applied on penile lesions suspected to be herpes simplex, premalignant epidermal changes developed. Discontinuation of treatment resulted in complete healing. It seems wise when IDU in DMSO is used for similar cases, to consider this treatment experimental because both constituents of this preparation are, in theory, potentially carcinogenic.

Notes: A case is described in which the initial clinical and histological features were suggestive of rosacea. Subsequent progress revealed the diagnosis to be chronic lymphatic leukemia. The initial biopsy specimens were reviewed and small but definite quantities of follicular mucinosis were noted after appropriate staining. If this had been noted earlier the diagnosis would have been made more rapidly. This case demonstrates the importance of detecting follicular mucinosis. We are not aware of follicular mucinosis having been described in association with chronic lymphatic leukemia previously. It is also rare for leukemias other than the monocytic type to present with cutaneous lesions, though skin lesions may occur in established cases.

Notes: Forty patients with perioral dermatitis were assessed with particular reference to factors which might be incriminated in the aetiology of this condition. Many previously implicated features could not, in fact, be substantiated. We believe that perioral dermatitis is a distinct entity but that the abuse of topical corticosteroids aggravates the disease.

Notes: A patient with moderately severe mucous membrane pemphigoid is described. The onset of deafness was associated with the appearance of postero-superior retraction pockets in both eardrums. It is postulated that this was due to mucous membrane pemphigoid involving the mucosa of the middle ear. We are not aware of this complication having been described previously.

Notes: Three patients who developed a psoriasiform skin eruption following oral practolol administration are described with particular attention to the cutaneous histological changes. Although the clinical picture resembled psoriasis, the histological one did not, resembling rather that seen in a drug eruption. The possibility of an early lymphoma could not be excluded on purely histological grounds.

Notes: Abstract Lucilin, the main storage protein of larval fat body and hemolymph in the sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina, has been isolated as a series of trimers composed of subunits of 83,000±5% daltons. Extensive electrophoretically detectable polymorphism of lucilin subunit patterns occurs in wild and laboratory populations of Lucilia; from four to nine bands are seen in any one individual. Evidence from genetic, electrophoretic, immunological, and structural studies suggests the existence of a series of 12 or more closely related structural loci (designated Luc-1 to Luc-12) which may have arisen through gene duplication. Codominant allelic variation has been found at several of these loci. Luc-1 and Luc-3, and probably the other structural loci of the series, are located on chromosome 2.
