Abstract: During the last decade, gas exchange between atmosphere and ocean has found increasing interest. Some knowledge of global balances has accumulated for different gases. For an understanding and better prediction of gas exchange under changing conditions, the microphysical and physicochemical processes at the air‐sea interface itself should be known. Progress in understanding such processes has been slow, despite a remarkable increase of knowledge or experimental skill in some areas pertinent to the field. There is some reason for this. The gas exchange at the interface is obviously depedent on processes, which traditionally have been dealt with by different disciplines that otherwise have little in common (such as turbulence, wave dynamics, physicochemistry, structural chemistry, surfactant chemistry, chemical engineering). To bridge the gap, an informal meeting of researchers from different disciplines was held at Trier, Germany, sponsored by the Sonderforschungsbereich Meeresforschung der Universität Hamburg (funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft).
