Abstract:
By analyzing the influence of Faraday rotation and light absorption on the scattering processes, it is found that the change of scattering intensity of certain modes depends directly upon the figure of merit Q (Q=θF/2α, where, θF is the Faraday rotation angle and α is the coefficient of absorption) of the materials concerned. Thus in an experiment of Raman scattering from magnetic materials, applying a longitudinal magnetic field (H∥K, where K is the direction of light propagation, that is the Faraday arrangement) and a transverse magnetic field (H⊥K), two scattering cross sections Is and I′s will be obtained, which correspond to the processes with and without the influence of Faraday rotation. The ratio Is/Is is uniquely related to the merit of figure Q. Taking Raman active phonon of iron garnet (O10h space group) as example, we quantitatively evaluated the dependence of I′s/Is on Q.
