Notes: Interdiffusion and interface compound formation has been observed at the system Ni/In by using thin-film couples as well as thin In films on low index Ni single-crystal substrates. The method applied was the perturbed γγ-angular correlation technique, which is very sensitive to local structures and their changes around probe atoms. The successive occurrence of different Ni/In compounds could be observed on isochronal annealing above 230 K. A correlation between the appearance of compounds and In film thickness has been found.

Notes: Unusual clinicopathological features drew our attention to nine of 208 cases diagnosed as Hodgkin's disease. Lymph node biopsy specimens in these cases were immunostained with monoclonal antibodies against B-cell, T-cell and Reed-Sternberg cell associated antigens and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA). Reed–Sternberg-like and other atypical large cells were dispersed in a diffuse, small lymphocyte-rich background, consistent more often with the initial diagnosis of diffuse, lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease. The clinical stage in these cases was unusually advanced (stages III and IV). Splenomegaly was a common feature (six of nine cases), the male to female ratio was 7:2 and the median age was 55 years (range 25–77). Response to recognized regimes for Hodgkin's disease treatment was poor in most cases, and three patients died early of their disease. Large cells were B-lymphocytes expressing EMA—an immunophenotype similar to nodular, lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin's disease. Reed–Sternberg cell and T-cell associated antigens were absent on large cells. Mature T-cells, with nuclear irregularities in some instances, predominated in the background. A more appropriate diagnostic category is, therefore, T-cell-rich B-cell lymphoma. The cases represent a 4–5% erroneous diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease and further suggest that there is a need for revision of criteria for the diagnosis of the diffuse, lymphocyte predominance variant.

Notes: Abstract The magnetic hyperfine field was measured at 111In(111Cd) probe atoms in ultrathin Ni films epitaxially grown on Cu(100) utilizing the perturbed γγ-angular correlation (PAC) method. The behaviour of the hyperfine field as a function of temperature was studied for different film thicknesses ranging from 2 up to 10 monolayers. It was found that the strength of the hyperfine fields as well as the critical temperatures are strongly reduced for thin nickel films and approach the bulk value with increasing film thickness. The orientation of the hyperfine field is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Four antiepileptic drugs were investigated in an inhibitory avoidance task in mice. Following IP administration 30 min prior to training, carbamazepine (32 mg/kg), phenytoin (30–60 mg/kg), diazepam (2–8 mg/kg) and clonazepam (0.125–0.5 mg/kg) impaired retention. When administered 30 min prior to the retention test none of the drugs under investigation affected retention. The drugs did not affect latencies in the hot plate test. This indicates that in the case of pretraining drug administration effects on retention cannot attributed to elevated pain thresholds. Carbamazepine and phenytoin impaired avoidance learning at doses above those which prevent electroshock induced tonic hindlimb convulsions. Diazepam and clonazepam were effective at lower than anticonvulsant doses. The results of the study are relevant to the evaluation of CNS side effects of antiepileptic drugs in mice.

Notes: Abstract Applications of hyperfine-interaction techniques, like NMR, PAC and Mößbauer spectroscopy, to well-characterized surfaces are discussed and the present knowledge of surface hyperfine fields is reviewed. Measurements of nuclear spin relaxation permit to extract the local density of electron states at the Fermi level of adsorbed alkali atoms. From the observed electric-field-gradient properties surface probe sites and diffusion processes can be inferred; the experimentally determined magnetic hyperfine fields give access to the electron-spin behaviour at magnetic surfaces.

Notes: Abstract We prove that a bounded operator on a Banach lattice, satisfying a growth condition, is regular. Also, we prove that the generator of a C 0-semigroup on such a lattice for which such an operator exists is bounded.

Notes: Abstract Utilizing a two-beam technique in the frequency domain, the pumped absorption of PS II membrane fragments from spinach and of acetonic chlorophyll-a solutions was measured at room temperature. In a very narrow wavelength region (0.2 nm around the pump pulse wavelength) the relative test beam transmission exhibited either a decrease or an increase, respectively, dependent on the intensity of a strong pump beam. In contrast, the transmission changes of chl-a solutions were not affected by the wavelength mistuning between pump and test beam. The data obtained for PS II membrane fragments were interpreted in terms of excited state absorption of pigment-protein clusters within the light-harvesting complex of PS II. The interpretation of the small absorption band as a homogeneously broadened line led to a transversal relaxation time for chlorophyll in vivo of about 1 ps.

Notes: Abstract Interface compound formation in Ni/In film couples has been studied by means of the PAC method using radioactive111In probe atoms. Subsequent occurrence of the compounds Ni10In27, Ni2In3, NiIn and Ni3In has been observed after isochronal annealing. Interdiffusion was found to start at temperatures about 250K whereby Ni propagates into the In film.
