Notes: Nanometer-scale mounds were fabricated by applying voltage pulses between a substrate and an atomic force microscope cantilever coated with magnetic material. Mounds were formed on both insulator and conducting substrates. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) observations of the fabricated mounds were performed, and the contrast was turned over by reversing the magnetization of the tip, which is convincing proof that the mounds are magnetic. The MFM images also suggest that the mounds are perpendicularly magnetized. These results demonstrate that scanning probe microscope based nanofabrication is a promising method to fabricate nanoscale magnetic dots on any kind of substrates. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thin Rb1−xCsxI mixed crystals have been grown from the melt in a very small gap formed in between a pair of quartz plates and reflection spectra were measured in the uv-light region at low temperature. Continuous spectral changes of the exciton bands with the composition x suggest strongly the formation of extended solid solution both in the RbI-rich (0.0≤x≤0.4) and CsI-rich (0.7≤x≤1.0) regions. The formation was confirmed by x-ray diffraction, and the compositional change of the lattice constant was determined. These results are in contrast to the eutectic type phase relation with only a limited solid solubility observed in the bulk state of the RbI–CsI binary system. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The authors examined the regulatory effects of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) on granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF)-, interleukin-3 (IL-3)- or macrophage colony stimulating factor (M-CSF)-induced gene expression of the low affinity receptor for IgE (Fc ε RII) on human monocytes and GM-CSF-, IL-3- or M-CSF-induced soluble Fc ε RII (sFc ε RII) release from monocytes. The expression of GM-CSF-, IL-3- or M-CSF-induced Fc ε RII on the surface of monocytes was reduced by TNF-α. The present analysis was designed to examine whether or not TNF-α could suppress GM-CSF-, IL-3- or M-CSF-induced Fc ε RII messenger RNA (mRNA) expression and enhance the release of sFc ε RII induced by these cytokines. The addition of TNF-α to monocyte cultures with GM-CSF, IL-3 or M-CSF significantly reduced Fc ε RII expression on the surface of monocytes and significantly increased sFc ε RII release from monocytes. These results suggest that TNF-α-dependent reduction of GM-CSF-, IL-3- or M-CSF-induced Fc ε RII expression on the surface of monocytes resulted, at least in part, from the suppression of Fc ε RII mRNA and the enhancement of sFc ε RII release.

Notes: Background: RANTES plays an important role in the production of allergic inflammation of the airway through its chemotactic activity for eosinophils. However, the intracellular signal regulating RANTES expression in human pulmonary vascular endothelial cells has not been determined. In the present study, therefore, we examined the role of p38 mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase in RANTES production by tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-stimulated pulmonary vascular endothelial cells in order to clarify the signal transduction pathway regulating RANTES production by pulmonary vascular endothelial cells. Methods: We examined p38 MAP kinase activation, and the effect of SB 203580, as the specific inhibitor for p38 MAP kinase, on p38 MAP kinase activity and RANTES production by TNF-α-stimulated human pulmonary vascular endothelial cells. Results: The results showed that TNF-α induced RANTES production and p38 MAP kinase activity in human pulmonary vascular endothelial cells. Abrogation of p38 MAP kinase activity by SB 203580 repressed TNF-α-induced p38 MAP kinase activity and RANTES production. Conclusions: These results indicate that p38 MAP kinase plays an important role in the TNF-α-activated signaling pathway which regulates RANTES production by human pulmonary vascular endothelial cells.

Notes: The aims of the New SUBARU project are to promote industrial applications in the VUV and soft X-ray region and to develop research and development towards new light sources. The main facility of the New SUBARU project is the 1.5 GeV electron storage ring which is under construction at the SPring-8 site in Harima Science Garden City, Japan. The storage ring is quasi-isochronous and has variable momentum dispersion for the deep study of beam dynamics in very short bunches.

Notes: A new crowbarless power supply is to be installed at the New SUBARU storage ring. A high-power switching inverter unit eliminates the need for expensive and unstable crowbar circuits for the klystron power supply. It also realizes a very small voltage ripple in the low-frequency region. This is an important characteristic, especially in a quasi-isochronous storage ring such as New SUBARU.

Notes: We have previously shown that tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-α) reduces interleukin-4 (IL-4)-induced Fce RII expression in human monocytes. It has been shown that TNF-α activates nuclear transcriptional factors through the generation of reactive oxygen intermediates (ROIs), and antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) inhibits TNF-α-induced activation of nuclear transcriptional factors. Therefore, we hypothesized that TNF-α-dependent reduction of IL-4-induced Fce RII expression in monocytes might be mediated through the ROIs-activated mechanism. In the present study, to test our hypothesis, we examined the effect of NAC on TNF-α-dependent reduction of IL-4-induced FcɛRII expression in human monocytes. NAC attenuated TNF-α-dependent reduction of IL-4-induced Fcɛ RII expression by attenuating TNF-a-dependent reduction of Fcɛ RII mRNA expression. Similarly, the structurally unrelated antioxidant, pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC), also effectively attenuated this reduction. These results indicate that an ROIs-activated and antioxidant-sensitive mechanism might be involved in TNF-α-dependent reduction of IL-4-induced FcɛRII expression in monocytes.

Notes: The proliferative activity of the long junctional epithelium (LJE) in rats was examined using stains for argyrophilic proteins of the nucleolar organizer region (AgNORs protein). The LJE was experimentally produced by insertion of a rubber piece between maxillary molars for 1 wk. After removal of the rubber, the length and AgNORs parameters of the LJE were measured and analyzed statistically. The LJE widely covered the apical side of the exposed root surface 4 wk after the removal. Its length was longest after 4 and 8 wk; it became shorter subsequently. The AgNORs were visible as black dots of various sizes and numbers on the sections. A high potential for proliferation was obvious in the LJE after 4 wk and was maintained until 12 wk after the removal. The AgNORs ratio on the connective tissue interface of the LJE was about twice of that of normal junctional epithelium after 4–12 wk. The proliferative activity on the root surface side was slightly increased after 4 wk. There was no significant difference in proliferative activity between the coronal and apical sides. These results suggest that the proliferative activity of the LJE is maintained continuously at a high level on the connective tissue interface supplying the epithelial cells. Basal cells proliferate at the connective tissue interface of the LJE, migrate directly to the root surface or via the apical portion and finally desquamate from the surface of the epithelium.
