Notes: Single Lesion Lowers ADFT. Introduction: This study investigated a hybrid approach to reduce the atrial defibrillation threshold (ADFT) by determining the effect of a single linear radiofrequency ablation (RFA) lesion on both the ADFT and activation patterns during atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods and Results: In 18 open chest sheep (45 to 57 kg), coil defibrillation electrodes were placed in a superior vena cava/right ventricular configuration. AF was induced by burst pacing and maintained with acetyl β-methylcholine (2 to 42 μL/min). ADFTs were obtained before and after a linear RFA lesion was created in the left atrium (LAL; n = 6), right atrium (RAL; n = 6), or neither atrium as a control (n = 6). In animals receiving an LAL, a 504-unipolar-electrode plaque was sutured to the LA. For animals receiving an RAL, two 504-electrode plaques were placed, one each on the LA and RA. From each plaque, activations were recorded before and after ADFT shocks, and organizational characteristics of activations were analyzed using algorithms that track individual wavefronts. In sham-treated controls, the ADFT did not change. In contrast, LAL reduced ADFT energy 29%, from 4.5 ± 2.3 J to 3.2 ± 2.0 J (P 〈 0.05). RAL reduced ADFT energy 25%, from 2.0 ± 0.9 J to 1.5 ± 0.7 J (P 〈 0.05). AF activation was substantially more organized after RFA than before RFA for both the RAL- and LAL-treated animals. Conclusion: A single RFA lesion in either the RA or LA reduces the ADFT in this sheep model. This decrease is associated with an increase in fibrillatory organization.

Notes: The crystal structure of vulgarone B (2,6,6,11-tetramethyltricyclo[5.4.0.02,8]undec-10-en-9-one), a carbocyclic sesquiterpene with the formula C15H22O, is reported. All intramolecular geometric parameters are as expected. The molecule contains a four-membered ring, in which all atoms are stereogenic. The 1,3 and 2,4 atoms of this cyclobutane are bridgehead C atoms which form part of six-membered and seven-membered rings.

Description: The 1949 rift zone eruption along the Cumbre Vieja ridge on La Palma involved three eruptive centers, 3 km spaced apart, and was chemically and mineralogically zoned. Duraznero crater erupted tephrite for 14 days and shut down upon the opening of Llano del Banco, a fissure that issued first tephrite and, after 3 days, basanite. Hoyo Negro crater opened 4 days later and erupted basanite, tephrite, and phonotephrite, while Llano del Banco continued to issue basanite. The eruption ended with Duraznero erupting basanite with abundant crustal and mantle xenoliths. The tephrites and basanites from Duraznero and Llano del Banco show narrow compositional ranges and define a bimodal suite. Each batch ascended and evolved separately without significant intermixing, as did the Hoyo Negro basanite, which formed at lower degrees of melting. The magmas fractionated clinopyroxene +olivine±kaersutite±Ti-magnetite at 600–800 MPa and possibly 800–1100 MPa. Abundant reversely zoned phenocrysts reflect mixing with evolved melts at mantle depths. Probably as early as 1936, Hoyo Negro basanite entered the deep rift system at 200–350 MPa. Some shallower pockets of this basanite evolved to phonotephrite through differentiation and assimilation of wall rock. A few months prior to eruption, a mixing event in the mantle may have triggered the final ascent of the magmas. Most of the erupted tephrite and basanite ascended from mantle depths within hours to days without prolonged storage in crustal reservoirs. The Cumbre Vieja rift zone differs from the rift zones of Kilauea volcano (Hawaii) in lacking a summit caldera or a summit reservoir feeding the rift system and in being smaller and less active with most of the rift magma solidifying between eruptions.

Description: Deep-sea sheet hyaloclastite consists mostly of sand-sized blocky and splinter-shaped shards, but also contains subordinate mm- to cm-sized thin, curved, and wrinkled plates and sheets of sideromelane. This latter type of shard, termed Limu o Pele, has been observed forming subaerially on Kilauea by entrapment of water in flowing lava followed by expansion of steam to form large bubbles which burst into thin fragments. Deep-marine limu has been inferred, from comparative morphological studies and assessment of physical bubble-forming conditions, to form in a similar way but with the increased ambient pressure and the higher viscosity of water reducing bubble expansion. Differing mechanisms of heat transfer and rates of magma chilling also modify the limu-forming process in the deep sea. This paper evaluates a variety of deep-sea limu-forming processes and develops a new and quantitatively supported model, based on observed limu-forming processes and criteria derived from dive samples and observations at Seamount Six, Cocos Plate. It is inferred that water and/or water-saturated sediment was trapped in extremely thin, fluid and rapidly advancing lava flows by various processes. Bubble formation might also occur during small-scale magma-fountaining driven by magmatic volatile exsolution and extreme vent constriction or during collapse of pillows and rapid drainage of the magma, but we found no deposits clearly resulting from these processes.
