Abstract: Bioassay techniques are often used to study the effects of allelochemicals on plant processes, and it is generally observed that the processes are stimulated at low allelochemical concentrations and inhibited as the concentrations increase. A simple empirical model is presented to analyze this type of response. The stimulation-inhibition properties of allelochemical-dose responses can be described by the parameters in the model. The indices, p% reductions, are calculated to assess the allelochemical effects. The model is compared with experimental data for the response of lettuce seedling growth to Centaurepensin, the olfactory response of weevil larvae to α-terpineol, and the responses of annual ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum Lam.), creeping red fescue ( Festuca rubra L., cv. Ensylva), Kentucky bluegrass ( Poa pratensis L., cv. Kenblue), perennial ryegrass ( L. perenne L., cv. Manhattan), and Rebel tall fescue ( F. arundinacea Schreb) seedling growth to leachates of Rebel and Kentucky 31 tall fescue. The results show that the model gives a good description to observations and can be used to fit a wide range of dose responses. Assessments of the effects of leachates of Rebel and Kentucky 31 tall fescue clearly differentiate the properties of the allelopathic sources and the relative sensitivities of indicators such as the length of root and leaf.

Abstract: From January 1978 to February 1999, 120 patients (42 males and 78 females) with cardiac myxoma (115) or myxosarcoma (5) underwent surgical excision or biopsy. There were 5 early postoperative deaths (mortality, 4.2%). Seventy-three survivors were followed up for 0.75 to 20.25 years (mean, 9.42 years); they comprised 4 myxosarcoma patients who all had recurrence or metastasis, and 69 myxoma patients who had no evidence of recurrence or metastasis. Neither familial myxoma nor Carney complex was found. The 5 cases of myxosarcoma and 18 randomly selected cases of myxoma were evaluated for proliferative activity, metastatic potential, and oncogene products by immunohistochemistry. The expression of p53 and Bcl-2 was similar in both groups. Overexpression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen and low expression of nm23 in myxosarcoma are consistent with the high rate of recurrence and metastasis of this tumor. Surgical resection of sporadic myxoma is a safe and effective treatment with satisfactory early and long-term results. However, the prognosis of myxosarcoma is still disappointing. Regular echocardiography and chest radiography or computed tomography are necessary for early detection of recurrence or metastasis of myxosarcoma.

Abstract: Conversations in 12 European and 12 Chinese families in New Zealand were recorded and a sample of 15,988 turns of talk was coded under single-and multiaddressee turns. As predicted, the two types of turns varied with cultural individualism/collectivism in both inter-and subcultural comparisons. Single-addressee turns were more common in European (individualistic) than in Chinese (collectivistic) families, and in high (individualistic) than in low (collectivistic) acculturated Chinese families; the reverse was true for multiaddressee turns. The predicted relationship was confirmed by an individual-level comparison: Members of Chinese families who were highly acculturated used more single-and fewer multiaddressee turns when compared with less highly acculturated members. This relationship was unaffected by language (English or Chinese) or age of family members. In a separate analysis of the effect of turn types on turn taking, it was found that multiaddressee turns were associated with more false starts (two or more members started talking simultaneously). Implications of the results for cross-cultural and communication research were discussed.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the fortification of wheat flour with lysine on selected health indicators among farm families obtaining 58% to 67% of their dietary protein from wheat. A man, a woman, and a child aged 5 to 12 years were studied from each of 88 families in a village near Huixian City, Henan Province, China. Half of the families received wheat flour fortified with 3 g of lysine per kilogram for three months, and the other half received wheat flour without fortification. The results showed a significantly greater gain in the height and weight of children receiving lysine-fortified wheat flour. Hemoglobin values were not affected. The mean prealbumin values of adult men and women were higher in those receiving lysine. The numbers of CD3 T cells increased significantly in women and children, as did the complement fraction C3 and IgG in men, IgA in women, and IgG, IgA, IgM, and C3 in children. These results indicate that lysine fortification of wheat flour can significantly improve some indicators of the nutritional status and immune function of family members consuming a wheat-based diet.
