Description: A survey of 116 repeat stations of the Italian Magnetic Network was carried out between 1989 and 1992. We describe the characteristics of the selected network repeat station sites, the characteristics of the measuring equipment, the data reduction procedure and the analysis in terms of normal field, data mapping and secular variation. Together with the values from our previous campaigns, we also determined, for all elements, the normal fields of secular variation. The new repeat station data are listed. Results, maps and normal fields are discussed with respect to previous work and future survey plans.

Description: The importance of detecting possible electromagnetic signatures due to big earthquakes is self-evident, signatures which can be either anticipating, simultaneous or subsequent with respect to the main shock. Taking advantage of the present low Earth orbiting CHAMP satellite, we apply two “ad hoc” techniques both based on the Information Theory (after the seminal monograph by Shannon [1]) to the satellite magnetic data with the aim at extracting eventual time anomalies. These techniques have different time-space resolutions: the first technique requires a preliminary spherical harmonic analysis of daily magnetic data and, potentially, detects long-wavelength variations, while the second uses a preliminary wavelet analysis and can detect shorter-wavelength anomalies. Some examples are given for magnetic satellite data taken in correspondence with the two big earthquakes occurred in the Sumatra region on 26 December 2004 (M = 9.1) and 28 March 2005 (M = 8.6).

Description: In this work, the effects of magnetic inclusions in a Mars-like soil are considered with reference to the electromagnetic propagation features of ground-penetrating radars (GPRs). Low-frequency and time-domain techniques, using L-C-R meters and TDR instruments, respectively, are implemented in laboratory experimental set-ups in order to evaluate complex permittivity and permeability and wave velocity for different scenarios of a dielectric background medium (silica) with magnetic inclusions (magnetite). Attenuation and maximum detection ranges have also been evaluated by taking into account a realistic GPR environment, which includes the transmitting/receiving antenna performance and the complex structure of the subsurface. The analysis and the interpretation of these results shed new light on the significant influence of magnetic inclusions on the performance of Martian orbiting and rover-driven GPRs.

Description: GEOSTAR, an European-funded project, is based on a submarine multidisciplinary observatory, that gathered geophysical and geochemical data during a period of six months, from September 2000 to March 2001, in its first deep seafloor mission (about 2000 m depth), off the coast of Ustica Island (Sicily, Italy). GEOSTAR was equipped with several scientific instrumentations, among them two magnetometers. Total intensity of the Earth’s magnetic field and its vectorial components were recorded by means of a scalar magnetometer (Overhauser type) and a suspended three axial fluxgate magnetometer, the latter being designed and built at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia laboratories. The adverse conditions of an environment located at 2000 m under the sea surface, obliged the making of a special design for the whole frame, including the use of non-magnetic materials for the structure, and the installation of two opposite expanding arms that contained the magnetometers. The geomagnetic experiment was completed by carrying out two fundamental procedures: the instrumental calibration and the computation of the vectorial magnetometer orientation with respect to the geographical reference, both are described in this paper. We also illustrate some properties of the complete magnetic data set, together with a spectral analysis performed in a particular condition of planetary magnetic activity, as well as applications aimed at extracting information about the crustal electric conductivity from the magnetic data in the area around Ustica Island.

Description: Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) is responsible for systematic magnetic observations in Italy made in observatories and repeat stations. At present, two regularly working geomagnetic observatories cover central and northern Italy: L’Aquila (the main Italian observatory since 1958) and Castello Tesino (since 1964). A new observatory is, at the moment, being installed in the southern Mediterranean (near Sicily) at Lampedusa Island. Once this installation is successfully completed, the three observatories will be able to provide a full coverage of the whole Italian latitudinal extension. A network of magnetic repeat stations is regularly distributed across Italy and measurements in some locations have been made for more than a century. Since the end of the 1970’s, INGV has been developing a modern repeat station network used for the compilation of the Italian magnetic maps. The most recent survey was made between 2004 and 2005 using L’Aquila Observatory as reference.

Description: The Spherical Cap Harmonic Analysis (SCHA) is a regional modeling technique based on appropriate functions which are solutions of Laplace’s equation over a constrained, cap-like region of the Earth. The concept was introduced in 1985 in the context of geomagnetism as a local or regional extension of the classic global spherical harmonic analysis. Starting from the basic principles in which the analysis method is founded, this paper describes the latest applications for the modeling of the main magnetic field and its secular variation. Although examples of applications over small areas will be given, it will be shown that, in general, the bigger the region the more appropriate the technique. Therefore, this paper focuses on the results and perspectives over continental areas, like Antarctica or Europe. The possible application to the derivation of isogonic charts for navigational purposes with suitable time predictions will be emphasized. At the same time, the limitations of the method will be examined. Although recent revisions of the technique seem to solve some of the problems, our present research focuses on the quest for solutions to the still unanswered questions.

Description: The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica under the P.N.R.A. (National Program of Research in Antarctica) has the responsibility of acquiring geophysical observations at the Italian Antarctic Base of Terra Nova Bay. Among others, geomagnetic and riometric data can provide some new insights into local and global activity of the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. This article investigates some properties of these kinds of data by means of spectral and fractal analyses. In addition, a multidimensional index is derived from this single-point dataset to represent not only the local but also the global state of the magnetospheric activity.

Description: The transformation of a set of spherical harmonic coefficients characterizing a model of the geomagnetic field, or a general function defined on a sphere, subject to a rotation of the coordinate system, is given by the direct relations between the coefficients and then by using a numerical approach. The parameters for a pair of such rotations (from one set to another, and vice versa) are given, along with a few examples of their application. The method is particularly useful for the comparison of geophysical characteristics derived from models developed under different coordinate systems. It offers a practical solution to the problem, which can be implemented without difficulty.

Description: The GEOSTAR is a technological and scientific project aimed at the realisation of an autonomous benthic observatory able to perform long-term, continuous and integrated geophysical and environmental measurements in deep seafloors. The observatory is conceived to be a node of existing and future geophysical monitoring networks, making possible their extension offshore. The GEOSTAR observatory prototype hosts sensors for seismic, geomagnetic, gravimetric, geochemical and oceanographic researches up to abyssal depths (4000 m). The first 1-year scientific mission is foreseen within the end of the millennium in the abyssal plain (3400 m) of the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea, where key information about the geodynamics and oceanography of the whole Mediterranean basin can be acquired.
