Description:
The Atlantic Ocean has been the most studied and best understood of the World Oceans, for the reason of its importance for the European and American societies. There is a growing evidence that the Atlantic circulation plays a crucial role in the Earth's climate. In this article we summarize our current knowledge of the large scale currents in the Atlantic as well as the variability of the circulation on multiple space and time scales. We also outline outstanding challenges for future oceanographic investigations of the Atlantic current systems.
