Description: Coastal waters have strong gradients in dissolved organic matter (DOM) quantity and characteristics, originating from terrestrial inputs and autochthonous production. Enclosed seas with high freshwater input therefore experience high DOM concentrations and gradients from freshwater sources to more saline waters. The brackish Baltic Sea experiences such salinity gradients from east to west and from river mouths to the open sea. Furthermore, the catchment areas of the Baltic Sea are very diverse and vary from sparsely populated northern areas to densely populated southern zones. Coastal systems vary from enclosed or open bays, estuaries, fjords, archipelagos and lagoons where the residence time of DOM at these sites varies and may control the extent to which organic matter is biologically, chemically or physically modified or simply diluted with transport off-shore. Data of DOM with simultaneous measurements of dissolved organic (DO) nitrogen (N), carbon (C) and phosphorus (P) across a range of contrasting coastal systems are scarce. Here we present data from the Roskilde Fjord, Vistula and Öre estuaries and Curonian Lagoon; four coastal systems with large differences in salinity, nutrient concentrations, freshwater inflow and catchment characteristics. The C:N:P ratios of DOM of our data, despite high variability, show site specific significant differences resulting largely from differences residence time. Microbial processes seemed to have minor effects, and only in spring did uptake of DON in the Vistula and Öre estuaries take place and not at the other sites or seasons. Resuspension from sediments impacts bottom waters and the entire shallow water column in the Curonian Lagoon. Finally, our data combined with published data show that land use in the catchments seems to impact the DOC:DON and DOC:DOP ratios of the tributaries most.

Description: Nitrate reduction process rates (denitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium rate - DNRA, anammox) were collected during a research cruise to the Baltic Sea during May-June 2016 as part of the Vici Project “Response of the Iron Biogeochemical Cycle on Continental Shelves to Seawater Deoxygenation” and the BONUS-COCOA project. Sediment sampling and incubation experiments were carried out onboard the RV Pelagia (NIOZ, Netherlands, cruise 64PE411). Whole cores were incubated on board at in situ bottom water temperature and oxygen conditions in the dark. Stable isotopically labelled nitrate (15N-NO3-) was added to overlying water and cores were capped according to Nielsen et al. (1992). Three cores were 'sacrificed' over time (2, 4h, 6h, 8h) after 15-NO3- addition by slurrying the surface and sampling for dissolved gas and solutes. Slurry experiments were also carried out in parallel to core incubations at each site (Risgaard-Petersen et al., 2003; Song et al., 2013). Analysis of 15N compounds was carried out at the University of Southern Denmark (Dalsgaard et al., 2013). Process rates were calculated according to Song et al. (2016). In addition to the calculated process rates, the dataset includes the following in situ parameters: bottom water salinity, temperature and oxygen (obtained from CTD sensors), nitrate (measured spectrophotometrically according to Schnetget and Lehners, 2014) and total organic carbon data (derived from Hermans et al., 2019).

Description: Stable silicon isotopes were measured on water samples taken in March, June, July, August and September 2019 in Lake 850, Northern Sweden. Water samples for stable Si isotopes were sampled in HDPE acid-washed 125ml Naglene bottles and filtered directly in the field through 0.45μm Sterivex filter and further acidified using HCl to pH 2. Stable silicon isotopes were performed on cation-exchange collumn cleaned (Georg et al., 2006) samples using MC-ICP-MS at Vegacenter, Stockholm.

Description: Total organic carbon (TOC), biogenic silica (BSi) concentrations, total nitrogen (TN) concentrations and carbon nitrogen ratios (C/N) from short sediment core, which was taken in March 2019 from ice-covered lake are presented. The sediment core analyzes of TOC, TN and C/N were measured on 5 to 10 mg of freeze-dried sediment using elemental analyzer COSTECH ECS4010. The biogenic silica concentrations were determined using weak alkaline extraction by Conley and Schelske (2001) using 30mg of freeze-dried sediment reacting with 40ml of 0.1M Na2CO3 for 5 hours. The DSi concentration in the extracted aliqote was measured using molybdate blue method (Strickland and Parsons, 1972) using Smartchem 200, AMS System descrete analyzer.
