    Description: Natural sites in urban spaces can have a key role in citizen well-being, providing fundamental ecosystem services to the population and assuring a multitude of benefits. Therefore, cities should guarantee a number of green areas and their conservation in time as an essential part of urban architecture. In this framework, cooperation between scientists, decision makers and citizens is critical to ensure the enhancement of green public spaces. Social and scientific communities are called to work in a tuned way to combine scientific knowledge and methods to local socio-economic contexts, driven by the values of geoethics. The Bullicante Lake case study, discussed in this work, represents an example of application of geoethical values, such as inclusiveness, sharing, sustainability and conservation of bio- and geodiversity. This urban lake in Rome appeared following illegal excavation works in 1992 and remained closed until 2016 favouring re-naturalization processes. Over time, this site was often threatened by pending actions for building. The aim of this study was to highlight how fruitful cooperation between science and citizens is able to transform a degraded urban area into a place of knowledge, recreation, enjoyment and eco-systemic preservation. Moreover, on the basis of this experience, the authors proposed a generalised approach/strategy to be developed and applied in other contexts. The active involvement of citizens and the cooperation among scientists, artists and institutions were able to redress opportunistic behaviours well by preventing site degradation and its improper use, favouring environmental safeguarding and making possible the site’s recognition as a natural monument. The results of these actions led to the improved quality of citizen life, showing an excellent example of virtuous cooperation between science and society.

    Description: There are three classes of geothermometers and fCO2-indicators (collectively known as geoindicators): the traditional or classical ones, the theoretical activity-based geoindicators, and multicomponent chemical geothermometry. Most traditional geothermometers (e.g., SiO2, Nasingle bondK, Na-K-Ca, Ksingle bondMg) are linear functions linking the logarithm of the equilibrium constant of the controlling reaction to the absolute temperature reciprocal. Total concentrations are considered in most traditional geothermometers. Thanks to these two characteristics, the traditional geothermometers are simple to be used, which explains their widespread use. However, there are at least two issues which have been disregarded or not properly considered in the derivation of traditional geothermometers. One is that total concentrations of relevant solutes can deviate considerably from the activities of the aqueous species participating to the controlling mineral-solution reactions due to the formation of aqueous complexes. The other concerns the hydrothermal minerals, with some having variable composition and adularia being affected by Alsingle bondSi order-disorder on the tetrahedral sites. To overcome these two issues, theoretical activity-based geoindicators were recently proposed. To use these geoindicators is necessary to run a speciation program, but computed temperatures and CO2 fugacities are more reliable than those given by traditional geoindicators and additional information is obtained on the hydrothermal minerals present in the geothermal aquifer. Multicomponent chemical geothermometry consists in simulating the heating of the aqueous solution of interest from the P-T conditions present at the surface to those occurring in the geothermal aquifer. Both multicomponent chemical geothermometry and theoretical activity-based geoindicators call for the use of a suitable computer code and an internally consistent thermodynamic database. It would be desirable for the database to be shared, accepted and used by the entire scientific community.

    Description: Here we present digitization and analysis of the thermal springs of the world dataset compiled by Gerald Ashley Waring in 1965 into a collection of analog maps. We obtain the geographic coordinates of ~6,000 geothermal spring areas, including complementary data (e.g., temperature, total dissolved solids, flow rate), making them available in electronic format. Using temperature and flow rate, we derive the heat discharged from 1483 thermal spring areas (between ~10−5 and ~103 MW, with a median value of ~0.5 MW and ~8300 MW in total). We integrate this data set with other global data sets to study the relationship between thermalism and endogenous and exogenous factors with a supervised machine learning algorithm. This analysis confirms a dominant role of the terrestrial heat flow, topography, volcanism and extensional tectonics. This data set offers new insights and will boost future studies in geothermal energy exploration.

    Description: An evaluation of the feasible development of geothermal energy in Mozambique is proposed based on some thermal springs geochemical characterization in the Tete region. Chemical and isotopic data suggest that the springs have a meteoric origin and do not show connection with any active magmatic system. The proposed circulation model suggests high depths infiltration of meteoric waters along faults and fractures in a system characterised by discrete permeability and reservoir temperature between 90 and 120 °C. These results, jointly with low salinity fluids and corrosive components absence suggest that the geothermal system may be conveniently exploited for direct and indirect uses.
