Notes: Abstract. A search for new isomers of nanosecond lifetimes were carried out in 153Eu via the 150Nd(7Li,xnγ) reaction. The single particle angular momentum alignment and dynamical moment of inertia estimated from the experimental data indicate a configuration change at rotational energy ħω∼ 0.30 MeV. A decrease of B(E2) values is also observed at the same frequency. An isomeric level is identified at an excitation energy of 3100 keV (Jπ=35/2−) which corresponds to this frequency. The lifetime of the level is found to be 8.6 ± 1.3 nanosecond.

Notes: Abstract Introduction: With the introduction of new drugs, the efficacy of chemotherapy in non-small-cell lung cancer has been improving. The combination of paclitaxel and carboplatin has shown activity in this disease but is far from curative. Methods: The antiangiogenic agent regimen of TNP-470/minocycline was added to treatment with paclitaxel and carboplatin alone and in combination in animals bearing the Lewis lung carcinoma. Results: Administration of the antiangiogenic regimen prior to, during and after the cytotoxic therapy increased the tumor growth delay 1.6-fold and decreased the number of lung metastases to 20% of the number observed in the control animals. [14C]Paclitaxel, platinum from carboplatin and [14C]albumin levels were determined over a 24-h time course in tumors and normal tissues of animals bearing the Lewis lung carcinoma and pretreated with TNP-470/minocycline or not pretreated. There were higher levels of [14C]paclitaxel, platinum from carboplatin and [14C]albumin in the tumors and some normal tissues of the animals that had received TNP-470/minocycline compared with those that had not received TNP-470/minocycline, especially at the earlier time points. Administration of TNP-470/minocycline to animals bearing the EMT-6 mammary carcinoma increased the cytotoxicity of high-dose paclitaxel toward EMT-6 tumor cells and toward bone marrow CFU-GM. Administration of TNP-470/minocycline to animals bearing the EMT-6 mammary carcinoma also increased the cytotoxicity of carboplatin toward the EMT-6 tumor cells but did not affect the toxicity of carboplatin toward the bone marrow CFU-GM. Conclusions: The addition of TNP-470/minocycline to treatment with paclitaxel and carboplatin resulted in increased antitumor activity and efficacy and further investigation of this combination is warranted.

Notes: Abstract This risk assessment on trichloroethylene (TRI) was carried out specifically for the marine environment, according to the methodology laid down in the EU risk assessment Regulation (1488/94) and the Guidance Document of the EU New and Existing Substances Regulation (TGD, 1997). The study consists of the collection and evaluation of data on effects and environmental concentrations from analytical monitoring programs in large rivers and estuaries in the North Sea area. The risk is indicated by the ratio of the "predicted environmental concentrations" (PEC) and the "predicted no effect concentrations" (PNEC) for the marine aquatic environment. In total, 19 studies for fish, 30 studies for invertebrates and 14 studies for algae have been evaluated. Both acute and chronic toxicity studies have been taken into account and the appropriate assessment factors have been used to define a PNEC value of 150 µg/l. Most of the available monitoring data apply to rivers and estuaries and were used to calculate PECs. The most recent data (1991-1995) support a typical PEC of 0.1 µg TRI/l water and a worst case PEC of 3.5 µg TRI/l water. The calculated PEC/PNEC ratios give a safety margin of 40 to 1,500 between the predicted no effect concentration and the exposure concentration. Additional evaluation of environmental fate and bioaccumulation characteristics showed that no concern for food chain accumulation is expected.

Notes: Abstract Multiple shoots were obtained from shoot tips and nodal explants of 20-year-old trees of Elaeocarpus robustus on Murashige and Skoog's medium supplemented with 0.5 mg l–1 each of BA and Kn. Explants taken from in vitro-proliferated shoots subsequently produced multiple shoots when cultured on the same basal medium containing 0.5 mg l–1 each of BA and Kn. Repeated subculture resulted in rapid shoot multiplication at an average rate of 10 new shoots per subculture. The addition of CM (10%) and CH (100 mg l–1) to the medium enhanced the number of shoots up to 20 per subculture and increased the length of shoots. In vitro-raised shoots were rooted on half-strength MS medium containing 1.0 mg l–1 IBA and 0.5 mg l–1 IAA. Following transplantation in the field 85% of the plantlets survived and grew uniformly.

Notes: Abstract There is increasing evidence that false eyewitness identification is the primary cause of the conviction of innocent people. In 1996, the American Psychology/Law Society and Division 41 of the American Psychological Association appointed a subcommittee to review scientific evidence and make recommendations regarding the best procedures for constructing and conducting lineups and photospreads. Three important themes from the scientific literature relevant to lineup methods were identified and reviewed, namely relative-judgment processes, the lineups-as-experiments analogy, and confidence malleability. Recommendations are made that double-blind lineup testing should be used, that eyewitnesses should be forewarned that the culprit might not be present, that distractors should be selected based on the eyewitness's verbal description of the perpetrator, and that confidence should be assessed and recorded at the time of identification. The potential costs and benefits of these recommendations are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The idea that quasar redshifts are notcosmological is favored by some astronomers. This meansthat quasars cannot be assumed to be at very largedistances and that the scale of the universe is lessthan suggested by the big bang cosmology. Analternative mechanism is the Wolf effect, in which lightbeams interact in a way that can produce frequencyshifts. Under suitable choice of source parameters and assuming the existence of strong anisotropy inthe interstellar medium, blueshifts can beavoided.

Notes: Abstract The frequency shift of spectral lines generatedby single dynamic scattering is known from Wolf'spioneering work. The multiple scattering effect isdiscussed and for the case of redshift two main results are shown: (1) the multiple scattering effectcauses a larger shift than does single scattering, and(2) m scatterings with scattering angle θ/m eachproduce a larger shift than that done by n scatterings with scattering angle θ/n each if m 〉n. These results might be of particular interest inconnection with the observed spectra ofquasars.

Notes: Abstract This risk assessment on chloroform was carried out specifically for the marine environment, according to the methodology laid down in the EU risk assessment Regulation (1488/94) and the Guidance Document of the EU New and Existing Substances Regulation (TGD, 1997). In total, 23 studies for fish, 17 studies for invertebrates and 10 studies for algae have been evaluated. Both acute and chronic toxicity studies have been taken into account and the appropriate assessment factors have been used to define a typical PNEC value of 72 µg/l. Due to limitations of the studies evaluated, a worst PNEC of 1 µg/l could also be used. Most of the available monitoring data apply to rivers and estuaries and were used to calculate PECs. The most recent data (1991-1995) support a typical PEC of 0.2 µg chloroform per litre of water and a worst case PEC of 5 to 11.5 µg chloroform per litre of water. The calculated PEC/PNEC ratios give a safety margin of 6 to 360 between the predicted no effect concentration and the exposure concentrations. A worst case ratio, however, points to a potential risk for sensitive species. Refinement of the assessment is necessary by looking for more data. Additional evaluation of environmental fate and bioaccumulation characteristics showed that no concern is expected for food chain accumulation.
