    Description: Against the background of EnMAP preparation analyses have been carried out on the status of research in various areas of hyperspectral remote sensing for the use of existing algorithms in the EnMAP application box. The aim was to compose the status of research in Germany and internationally. Therefore, in various fields of expertise applied and accordingly available algorithms and products based on hyperspectral data has been evaluated and documented. The intention has been to demonstrate and to evaluate the added value of hyperspectral remote sensing to multispectral methods for each product. For this purpose analyses have been carried out by different research groups which were based on the specialty and the experience of each group. Hereby a summary was created of each major application perspective and the relevant remote sensing derived variables and significant processing algorithms (state-of-the-art) belonging to this context. Based on this, the research delivers, as a result, a recommendation which of the algorithms should be implemented into the Applikationsbox of EnMAP. Tests of the algorithms or their implementation were not part of the analyses. However, notes have been given on what algorithms should be tested in the context of a detailed preparation phase. An assessment to the further R & D requirements in the development of algorithms has been made on this basis.

    Description: Pegmatite fields within granite plutons are commonly considered to have formed from residual melts of their host. This is not always true as demonstrated by the Tysfjord granite gneiss and its two groups of pegmatites. The Tysfjord granite gneiss, exposed in a tectonic window of the Caledonides of northern Norway, is part of the transscandinavian igneous belt (TIB) that includes several phases of granitic magmatism. In the northern Hamarøy area (Drag-Finnøy), where most rare-element pegmatites occur, Paleoproterozoic and metamorphosed Group 1 allanite–(Ce)–fluorite metapegmatites have similar bulk rock chemical composition as the TIB granite gneiss rocks, indicating that these pegmatites are residual melts. Group 1 metapegmatites, which are up to 400 m in size, are among the largest known intra-plutonic pegmatites with Nb–Y–F (NYF) signature. The formation of these unusually large granite-hosted NYF pegmatites may have been facilitated by the overall high F content of TIB granite gneisses. Undeformed Group 2 amazonite–tourmaline pegmatites yield columbite and zircon U–Pb ages in the range 400–379 Ma. These pegmatites are interpreted to be anatectic melts that formed from the partial melting of Tysfjord granite gneiss. Group 2 pegmatites, including those from Træna Island and the Sjona tectonic window (400 and 414 Ma), formed during late Caledonian ductile shearing and incipient unroofing of the central Scandinavian Caledonides and record progressively younger ages of this event from SW to NE.

    Description: Complementing the bottom-up methods, the emissions inventories of chemical species of climatic and environmental importance can be derived using atmospheric inverse models, providing integrated constraints on surface fluxes from all sectors/processes. For these models a variety of observations are used, including those from ground-based, ship, aircraft and satellite platforms. In particular, recent improvements in the capability of satellite observations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and air quality (AQ) are providing great advances on spatial resolutions. Among several plans to launch the GHGs and/or AQ observing satellites in near future, a plan is in progress in Japan to launch the “Global Observing SATellite for Greenhouse gases and Water cycle (GOSAT-GW)”, that will make observations of carbon dioxide (CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉), methane (CH〈sub〉4〈/sub〉), and nitrogen dioxide (NO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉) at a horizontal resolution of 3 km or less. The missions of GOSAT-GW include (1) monitoring of whole atmosphere-mean concentrations of GHGs, (2) validation of nationwide anthropogenic emissions of GHGs, and (3) detection of GHGs emissions from large sources, such as megacities and power plants. We will provide an overview of the mission/project and some highlights on the potential roles in quantifying anthropogenic emissions from local to global scales, supporting the mitigation policies on climate change as well as air quality at both international and national levels.
