    Abstract: Chronic intake of high amounts of fructose has been linked to the development of metabolic disorders, which has been attributed to the almost complete clearance of fructose by the liver. However, direct measurement of hepatic fructose uptake is complicated by the fact that the portal vein is difficult to access. Here we present a new, non-invasive method to measure hepatic fructose uptake and metabolism with the use of deuterium metabolic imaging (DMI) upon administration of [6,6’- 2 H 2 ]fructose. Using both [6,6’- 2 H 2 ]glucose and [6,6’- 2 H 2 ]fructose, we determined differences in the uptake and metabolism of glucose and fructose in the mouse liver with dynamic DMI. The deuterated compounds were administered either by fast intravenous (IV) bolus injection or by slow IV infusion. Directly after IV bolus injection of [6,6’- 2 H 2 ]fructose, a more than two-fold higher initial uptake and subsequent 2.5-fold faster decay of fructose was observed in the mouse liver as compared to that of glucose after bolus injection of [6,6’- 2 H 2 ]glucose. In contrast, after slow IV infusion of fructose, the 2 H fructose/glucose signal maximum in liver spectra was lower compared to the 2 H glucose signal maximum after slow infusion of glucose. With both bolus injection and slow infusion protocols, deuterium labeling of water was faster with fructose than with glucose. These observations are in line with a higher extraction and faster turnover of fructose in the liver, as compared with glucose. DMI with [6,6’- 2 H 2 ]glucose and [6,6’- 2 H 2 ]fructose could potentially contribute to a better understanding of healthy human liver metabolism and aberrations in metabolic diseases.

    Abstract: The Pan and Parapan American Games (PA15) are the third largest sporting event in the world and were held in Toronto in the summer of 2015 (10–26 July and 7–15 August). This was used as an opportunity to coordinate and showcase existing innovative research and development activities related to weather, air quality (AQ), and health at Environment and Climate Change Canada. New observational technologies included weather stations based on compact sensors that were augmented with black globe thermometers, two Doppler lidars, two wave buoys, a 3D lightning mapping array, two new AQ stations, and low-cost AQ and ultraviolet sensors. These were supplemented by observations from other agencies, four mobile vehicles, two mobile AQ laboratories, and two supersites with enhanced vertical profiling. High-resolution modeling for weather (250 m and 1 km), AQ (2.5 km), lake circulation (2 km), and wave models (250-m, 1-km, and 2.5-km ensembles) were run. The focus of the science, which guided the design of the observation network, was to characterize and investigate the lake breeze, which affects thunderstorm initiation, air pollutant transport, and heat stress. Experimental forecasts and nowcasts were provided by research support desks. Web portals provided access to the experimental products for other government departments, public health authorities, and PA15 decision-makers. The data have been released through the government of Canada’s Open Data Portal and as a World Meteorological Organization’s Global Atmospheric Watch Urban Research Meteorology and Environment dataset.

    Abstract: This main topic of the project and symposium includes the issue of releases of EASs and their monitoring in the environment, food, and feed in order to provide the full set of criteria, relevant for exposure assessment. Much less research has been devoted to these areas as compared to investigations on the effects. Issues of special importance regarding exposure to EASs, both from a research and risk management point of view, predominantly result from the fact that high-potency natural products are released as well as anthropogenic substances. In order to provide reliable information for risk assessment and risk management, substantial research, methodological improvements, and improvements in data interpretation are needed regarding the following: releases and technologies for their mitigation; monitoring; establishment of background levels; transport, partitioning, persistence, degradation, and metabolism of EASs; dealing with "joint toxicity"; and providing reliable analytical methodology conforming to the principles of quality assurance. Phytohormones play a special role in this whole area since they may be used as food amendments.
