Abstract:
The daling of ostrich eggshell through the analysis of amino acid racemization (AAR) provides an important alternative for establishing the ages of Pleistocene deposits. AAR dates of eggshell recovered from two Middle Paleolithic sites in southern Jordan indicate an age of ca. 69K bp for both sites. This age is consistent with estimates obtained from artifact sedation and paleoenvironrnental evidence. When compared to the artifact patterns and radiometric dates of other Levantine Mousterian occupations, these two sites suggest an uninterrupted cultural development stretching from ca. 80K to 45 К bp for the arid zone of the southern Levant. Cultural continuity for this interval in the region occupying the gateway from Africa is significant in proposals for the emergence of modern humans, those an African origin.
