    Description / Table of Contents: This textbook introduces fundamental dynamics of tropical atmosphere and ocean useful for advanced graduate courses in atmospheric and climate sciences. It presents an overview of simple atmospheric and oceanic models, as well as the observed phenomena associated with major climate modes in the tropics. It provides students with an up-to-date understanding of the dynamics of tropical climate and weather phenomena. A particular focus is given to scale interactions and atmosphere-ocean interactions associated with tropical mean climate (such as ITCZ asymmetry and annual cycles), synoptic-scale variability (such as synoptic wave trains, easterly waves and tropical cyclones), intraseasonal oscillations (such as Madden-Julian Oscillation and boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation), and interannual variability (such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation and Indian Ocean Dipole). Theoretical and conceptual models are presented for better understanding of physical mechanisms behind the observational phenomena. This book aims to motivate graduate students in atmospheric sciences and oceanography by providing them with the key methods and tools necessary to conduct research

    Description: This study examines the different impacts of two types of El Niños, the eastern Pacific El Niño (EP-EN) and the central Pacific El Niño (CP-EN), on tropical cyclone (TC) tracks over the western North Pacific (WNP) based on observational data. Whereas TC tracks between CP-EN and EP-EN show a small difference in boreal summer (JJA), they do exhibit a great difference in boreal autumn (SON), that is, TCs recurve northward at a further westward location near the coastline of East Asia during CP-EN. As a consequence, more TCs make landfall to Taiwan and South China during CP-EN. A further observational analysis indicates that the westward shift of the subtropical high and associated steering flow during CP-EN is a key factor that causes the difference in the TC tracks in autumn. Numerical experiments further suggest that the difference of local SST in the WNP between CP-EN and EP-EN accounts for the distinctive differences in the local Hadley circulation, the subtropical high and the TC steering flow.

    Description: By exciting subtropical teleconnections, sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the North Tropical Atlantic (NTA) during boreal spring can trigger El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events in the following boreal winter, thereby providing a precursor for ENSO predictability. However, this NTA−ENSO connection is not stationary, and it varies considerably over multidecadal timescales, which cannot be directly explained by the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation or the global warming trend. Here we show that multidecadal changes in the NTA−ENSO connection are principally controlled by multidecadal variability associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). During the positive phase of the NAO, the amplification of the NTA impact on ENSO mainly arises from strengthening of the boreal spring mean precipitation over the equatorial Atlantic and enhancement of the persistence of NTA SST anomalies, which enhance the NTA influence by exciting stronger and more persistent subtropical teleconnections. Our findings show that multidecadal variability of the NAO is key to understanding the impacts of the NTA SST on the tropical Pacific Ocean.

Therefore, various methods for test gas generation have been designed. Each method has unique advantages and disadvantages. Thus, a short overview is presented within the scope of this paper. Furthermore, a common bubbler system is presented, which was built to generate test gas from volatile organic compounds for experimental usage in laboratory applications. An analysis is conducted with respect to the generated concentrations at different temperatures and flow rates of the diluting gas. Accuracy and stability of this method are investigated.

Here we describe G&T-seq, a method for separating and sequencing genomic DNA and full-length mRNA from single cells. By applying G&T-seq to over 220 single cells from mice and humans, we discovered cellular properties that could not be inferred from DNA or RNA sequencing alone.

    Description: Current climate model projections do not exhibit a large change in the intensity of extratropical cyclones. However, there are concerns that current models represent moist processes poorly and this provides motivation for investigating observational evidence for how cyclones behave in warmer climates. In the North Atlantic in particular, recent decades provide a clear contrast between warm and cold climates due to Atlantic Multidecadal Variability. In this paper we investigate these periods as analogues which may provide a guide to future cyclone behaviour. While temperature and moisture rise in recent warm periods as in the projections, differences in energetics and temperature gradients imply that these periods are only partial analogues. The main result from current reanalyses is that while increased cyclone-associated precipitation is seen in the recent warm periods, there is no robust evidence of an increase in cyclone intensity by other measures, such as maximum wind speed or vorticity. A set of low- and high-resolution model simulations are also studied, suggesting that changes in cyclone intensity may be different in higher resolution reanalyses.

    Description: One of the most important linkages that couple terrestrial carbon and water cycles is ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE), which is relevant to the reasonable utilization of water resources and farming practices. Eddy covariance techniques provide an opportunity to monitor the variability in WUE and can be integrated with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observations. Scaling up in situ observations from flux tower sites to large areas remains challenging and few studies have been reported on direct estimation of WUE from remotely-sensed data. This study examined the main environmental factors driving the variability in WUE of corn/soybean croplands, and revealed the prominent role of solar radiation and temperature. Time-series of MODIS-derived enhanced vegetation indices (EVI), which are proxies for the plant responses to environmental controls, were also strongly correlated with ecosystem WUE, thereby implying great potential for remote quantification. Further, both performance of the indirect MODIS-derived WUE from gross primary productivity (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET), and the direct estimates by exclusive use of MODIS EVI data were evaluated using tower-based measurements. The results showed that ecosystem WUE were overpredicted at the beginning and ending of crop-growth periods and severely underestimated during the peak periods by the indirect estimates from MODIS products, which was mainly attributed to the error source from MODIS GPP. However, a simple empirical model that is solely based on MODIS EVI data performed rather well to capture the seasonal variations in WUE, especially for the growing periods of croplands. Independent validation at different sites indicates the method has potential for broad application.
